Pure genius

This book is extraordinary. I was a programmer for 15 years, took 7 off, and am now re-entering using a new language: Java. This book is absolutely outstanding. It is fun and easy to read. All of the examples are useful in ways that I recognize from my experience with other programming languages. I keep finding myself copying the examples in my IDE. thinking: "Oh yes, I'd better practice that one, I'm going to need to know how to do that!". Yet he doesn't go too deep into the particular examples like many programming books do: just far enough to provide the stub from which my future work can blossom. The author's sense of humor is engaging and keeps me interested and the coverage is well-organized and thorough. I really hope he got paid exceptionally well to write this book because it is pure genius.

but I want to learn Java now as it seems like it will be the thing I need to learn

Ok so my question is for this, as I am reading this book from the very beginning( I have zilch java programming skills whatsoever, and I bought this book to remedy just that) I am wondering, is THIS the book I should start from the VERY BEGINNING of learning Java with, or is there another dummies java book I need to look at first before hand before I move onto this book? I have a TINY bit of JavaScript programming skills, and I know they are two different concepts/programs/etc. but I want to learn Java now as it seems like it will be the thing I need to learn, to go in the direction I want to with regards to programming.any feedback will help Thank you!Oh and it is a great book already haha! wonderful fountain of knowledge!

Good Reference and Read

Good update and reference. I hold a lot of good examples and information. Now I need the update for Java 8,

I use it more as a rare case reference but it has helped me out in a few situations.

This was the first "Dummies" book I ever book. I always kept away from them mostly due to their title. But I find myself going to and reaching for this book as more of a reference rather than reading it from front to back. I have other Java books for reading the entirely. But if I'm not clear on some topics or want more clarity this book has surprised me and fed me the information I needed to get past the current step and onto the next. Like I said I use it for more of a reference book. Plenty of good examples of ways and sometimes different ways of doing things other books might not "tell" you about.

Slow moving for true beginners.

This should be noted as for beginners with zero knowledge of development. Material is good, well written, and not overly dry but progress is very slow.

Good book for beginner

This was a pretty great book for a beginner who wants to learn some Java. I've taken several programming classes before in college, but I never had to program for my work until now so I pretty much lost it all. I like the way the book breaks down programming methodology and helps you understand bits and pieces of the whole picture. If my college professors had taught Java this way, I would've definitely picked it up more easily.Recommended for a beginner programmer who wants to learn Java. If you're already well versed in object oriented programming, this book probably isn't the best for you.

Authoer keeps it interesting, as interesting as java can be at least.

Very educational. As a novice programmer, I found every page of this book to be useful. These "dummies" books are usually pretty easy to read. The author keeps it interesting. It's as if he were talking to you about programming, not as if you're just reading technical data from endless amounts of pages. The personal feel makes the information easier to remember.

The one thing missing is coverage of IDE's like Eclipse. No book is perfect

The hardest part of learning java is being overwhelmed with all the other stuff that goes along with it (OOPS, Swing, Html, Servlets, Tomcat, etc ). This book covers each area just enough to get a forest level understanding without your brain freaking out. The one thing missing is coverage of IDE's like Eclipse. No book is perfect, but this one gets the beginner balance just about right.
