The locals are burdened by high taxes, which have been levied by the British Captain andrew Russell (Paul Blackthorne). Much to their surprise, the arrogant Russell challenges the Indians to a cricket match. He says that if the locals win, then their taxes will be cancelled for the next three years. If the lose, they will have to pay thrice the amount of their normal taxes. Bhuvan takes up the challenge without consulting others. Having never played this alien game before, the villagers are furious at him. In Lagaan, Bhuvan tells everyone that it is essential to fight against the British rule. He then starts training the villagers, most of whom are reluctant to play.Russell's sister, Elizabeth, secretly teaches them the rules of the game. Though Bhuvan and Gauri are in love, Elizabeth falls for this Indian villager. The woodcutter, Lakha (played by Yashpal Sharma), is also in love with Gauri and wishes to discredit Bhuvan. He joins the cricket team but becomes Russell's spy. The second half of Lagaan focuses on the match between the villagers and the British officers. Things don't go as planned for the Indians. With the ball not spinning, catches being dropped and wickets not falling, Bhuvan is in deep trouble. The narration by Amitabh Bachchan adds to the thrill of the movie. The songs by A R Rahman, like Ghanan Ghanan and Radha Kaise Na Jale, are still popular. Corrupt DVD, not working. Received a replacement which is working fine.
Second review comment: I called customer care, they asked me to dump the cd and sent a fresh new pack. This time it worked well. Updating my review rating. My first review comment 18/02/17: Very very very poor. CD is not working properly. It gets stuck in between scenes specifically chapter 27 and does not work after that. Most of the important scenes getting skipped. Absolutely waste of money for a legend movie. Tried on DVD player connected to television as well as laptop. Also, tried downloading various software to try my luck playing the movie. Didn't expect Amazon to ship a product like this. Don't even have an option to return product :(

Very poor quality DVD. The volume goes up and down and then goes up and down again throughout the movie. Can't even replace the Prime items. Damn it! Very disappointed, Amazon.

I ordered Lagaan: Once upon a Time in India (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) because it was my husband’s favorite childhood movie. I love the Indian culture and music but was skeptical at how this movie would play, and I had never watched a Bollywood film so I was curious to see how my first one would be especially being in Hindi. It did not play on my newer Blue Ray/HD DVD player which plays all other movies but luckily I had my older non Blue Ray player which played it. It’s a long movie but well worth the time. It’s based in India in the 1980’s when the Brits came to take over India. It’s about common folk standing up against oppression and fighting for their rights. The story has many lessons on moral and ethical values as well. Lagaan is an enchanting film that works on several levels: as an exciting sports film, as a poignant triangular love story and as a social and political drama. Since ordering Lagaan I have since order several other Hindi Bollywood movies my husband loves and I enjoy them all.

Does not work on my DVD player. Had to put it in my computer but do not have a player on there so no subtitles. Maybe it was burned improperly? Maybe it's my Canadian DVD player.

Note: this is not a review of the disc, but the movie itself. The following may contain spoilers: This is one of my top ten movies. An investment of time, and worth it. I wrote a critical analysis of it for a graduate school seminar, a post-colonial literature class. Aamir Khan's reputation for a flawless work ethic soars -- every detail works, and the end result is magical. "Lagaan" must be experienced: the symbolism, the details, the storyline are an homage to Gandhi, ahimsa, and the triumph of good over evil. Khan's political and social concerns are laid bare, his anti-Imperialism unvarnished. But it's more than politics, thinly veiled. It's about the power of non-violence to triumph. It's a love story. It's a spiritual manifesto, of sorts. It's about the power of compassion and goodness over cruelty and greed. It's a story of idealism and fearlessness, the quintessential underdog movie; and I would argue it is the best underdog movie ever produced, for it incorporates the elements of India's caste system, British Imperialism, and grants the most unseemly -- a lame untouchable -- humanity. This isn't about a single underdog, but a motley crew finding something larger, with Khan's character referencing the power of Gandhi's non-violent philosophy, and India's basis for independence. For this reason the lame hand delivers victory over the iron fist: this is the movie's central symbolism, brilliantly developed throughout, in various ways. Cannot recommend enough: Khan should have received the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
