Update how many years later....it is unbelievable as to how long this razor has lasted. I truly am surprised as besides foils and cutters....cleaning solution cartridges are the only other maintenance item. I looked at a new Braun razor but my battery still holds an excellent charge and besides minor wear and tear....it works like new with this new foil/cutter. First I will point out that I bought this because of other reviews and that it was confirmed to replace my head and cutter block on my 360 Complete Activator. With that, the standard replacement is the 51S which I did not purchase, but rather the 30B instead. There are two noticeable differences: first is the color of the plastic components. They are black as compared to the original which is silver--- makes zero difference of course. The second is the tooth shaped cutter in between the foils-- that is a big difference. The one major complaint is that the original cutting system would grab and yank out facial hair which hurts. It seemed to be related to that tooth shaped cutter, but either way I was ready at this point to buy a Panasonic. It was mentioned that this assembly does not grab hairs.... that I can attest to as I shaved as I always did and it did not grab once. I have a goatee and I usually shave my fave first before trimming it. Definite improvement and of course the 30B cutter is about $15 less than the 51S which is nice as well. The reason for the 4-stars and not 5-stars is that I am still not 100% pleased with the way it cuts overall. I have used Norelco rotary razors and after switching to the Braun, I swore I would never go back as it was a huge improvement. The problem is that there ends up being particular hairs that it will not cut without going at a handful different attempts and angles. With that said, I still give the razor setup a thumbs up. Other than that it brought the razor back to life and no more pulled hairs. Also to dispel any myths--- it fits. I popped off my original parts and installed this without any issues. 5-seconds is all it takes to change the cutter and foil. The attachment post and everything were exactly the same and this part is made in Germany. And to reiterate, the only perceptible difference that you will see is the center saw tooth part and the color of the plastic--- otherwise it looks the same. If the rest of my razor is still functional in a year--- then I'll buy another one of the 30B's to bring it back to life otherwise, I may try a Panasonic to see how I like it. Feb 2016: Just bought my third one and now that I look back, I do need to replace it more often. The last one lasted 2-years and was still going, just not as sharp as it could be. Once again, the price was right and I am happy with the results.

I was leery about ordering the 30b, when the one I should be ordering was a 51s. But after reading what others said about this one and how it works better, I thought that I would give it a try. It does cost less than the 51s and the reasons given for buying the 30b made since. But my biggest concern was would the 30b fit and work in my Aviator, well it does and it does give a very close shave again. The reason that I bought a new set was because the foil on my shaver had developed a hole in it. So I was trying to look around and find the best price for the correct product and I think that this is it. Another tip for those of you that have the Braun razors that have the alcohol cleaning system, you can save yourself some money by replacing the alcohol yourself. When you have a new container, put it on a level surface and mark the level of the alcohol in the container with a permanent marker, so that you know how much denatured alcohol to pour in when you go to refill it yourself. You need to use denatured alcohol when you refill the container, because the denatured alcohol has less water in it than rubbing alcohol, you can find denatured alcohol in the painting section of most stores. Do not wash out the old containers with water, just try to get out as much of the old alcohol as you can, you don't want any water in the container that you cannot get out. Add one half teaspoon of the lemon oil and one half teaspoon of sewing machine oil to the container and then pour in the denatured alcohol to the mark that you put on it when it was new. Do not over fill the container, the cleaning system has a level sensor in it and if it is overfilled you will have to pour out some of liquid until it will work. Also do not put too much lemon oil in you mixture it will help to take away the finish on the plastic parts. By doing this you can save yourself some money by not having to continually buy the new containers and still have a clean razor.

I saw horror stories from people who bought the 51S replacement cutter and screen, and they recommended the 30B. I am glad I followed that advice. Before I purchased the 30B I called Braun, and of course the representative never heard of the 51S issues, and cautioned me not to buy the 30B for my 8985 as it could damage the razor. After having shaved now for over a month with the 30B, it's a pleasure every time I shave now...which has always been a chore my whole life. This cutter and screen combo work better than the original 360 set which I last used specifically designed for the 8985. The screen surface area is slightly reduced along the sides, but the blades are the real difference. The blades are thinner and more numerous. When I shave now I can hear very high-pitched snipping sounds as the hairs are being cut. The old 360 did not do that, and I could only tell if I was clean shaven by visual inspection or feeling with my hand. It is an awesome feature to be able to pull your skin taunt with one hand and use the razor with the other hand until all the snipping sounds stop...and I'm done, baby smooth! :) There are only 2 minor drawbacks for me. The color of the plastic head is black, whereas the 8985 is a silver/blue colored shaver; but it's dark blue so unless you look really close it looks like a color match. And another very minor drawback is the corners of the plastic head leave some very tiny openings when snapped into place. It snaps securely, don't get me wrong, but again you have to look very close to see those imperfections. The best plus of all is the 30B costs $15 less than the 51S, and yet gives the best shave I ever had from my 8985. I will not buy the 51S and even if they were to bring back the original 360 replacement cutter/screen for my razor I am going to stick with the 30B!
