They are no bigger than 1 square inch.

Instructions say to rough surface. Is it necessary? and can you recommend a tool to do this? (mobile)

There is a square of sandpaper in the pack. 4 or 5 wipes of that around the puncture is enough to give the self-adhesive glue a rough surface to bond to. You don't need any additional tool. Hope that helps!
