Known as the Black Swordsman, he has an unrelenting grudge against the king. Before the twilight of Midland, a young mercenary named Guts fights for his fortune on the front lines. There he meets Griffith, who is charismatic, graceful and deadly. Griffith s mercenary company, the Band of the Hawk, is a powerful military force and the talk of elite political circles. Between the strength of Guts anger and Griffith's ambition, the face of midland will never be the same. Review: BERSERK! - Small box, big content. Amazing anime. Review: Great release with some minor issues. - As far as packaging goes, this was the best I have ever received. It's pretty typical to get DVD, cds blu rays ect in deplorable condition. This was not the case. Double bubble wrapped, with all the dvds still attached and not floating around. Both the box and dvds were in flawless condition. On to the dvds themselves. So there is an issue on HD tvs with this release. As some have commented, there appear to be tracking lines at the bottom of the screen. On nearly every transition you get a brief line appearing at the bottom of the image. This can happen 4 or 5 times in just seconds if there are quick cuts. However, on a standard tube TV. The vast majority of these do not appear if at all as this occurs far enough down on the image that it will not appear in frame on a standard tube tv. There are ways to fix the issue if you watch dvds on your PC, as it is possible to adjust the visible frame so it is just small enough to remove it from the frame and that is what I have done. So no harm there. Just be aware the issue is there, but at the same time there are more than a couple ways to fix it if it bothers you.

A classic series
This is an old school classic. Great to own, and not quite as over the top in terms of content as I was remembering. The movies that rebooted the series I think had more graphic content, with less story due to time constraints. Still a mature series, so keep that in mind. Plenty of violence, and a surprising amount of political intrigue. And demons eventually. If you’re looking for an exact adaptation of the manga, of course, this series basically bypasses the first arc in favor of getting right to the Golden Age arc. A good series overall, and a shame it never got the second season. To get more story, you’ll have to check out the new series (which isn’t as bad as some critics like to say). But even then, it still only covers so much, and then you’ll have to turn to the manga. But after watching this, your interest might be piqued enough to do so.

Dark but classic
I've been looking for this series as I'd heard good things about it. It's brutal and not for kids. It's a dark classic for a reason! I recommend it if you like dark fantasy.

I highly recommend reading the manga also
I highly recommend reading the manga also. Kentaro Miura dark fantasy saga is incredible, and feels like it solidly belongs in that sort of static storytelling. But, the anime is still an excellent experience. I'm giving it full marks, just because I think it's flaws are sort of charming in that tasty 90's way. The soundtrack is splendid, but that's to be expected, because it's Susumu Hirasawa, who I best remember as the guy who's songs were stuck in my head for literal months after the first time I watched Paprika. The artwork can be rough or lazy, and it's pretty clear that they were working on a budget, but they go out of their way to deliver some gorgeousness when the moment really needs it. If you're a fan of dark fantasy, and can handle graphic sexual violence and a lot of heavy content, this story deserves your time. I think the anime is the most accessible way to start, but the full experience is in the manga.
