Excellent tool
Love this axe. Wanted a full tang hatchet, because I don't want to faff around with handle maintenance. I own other Estwing tools, so I know they're made to last a lifetime. This axe arrived in perfect condition and was usable-sharp straight out of the box. I've since given the blade a honing on my water stones and it's now like a razor blade. Used it a few times, I think it's light weight, holds its edge really well but most of all is very well balanced. You get great accuracy in the swing.

I was just wondering if it needed a sharpen when...
...I chopped the end of my thumb off. It's a beautiful axe, solid, one piece design. It'll look great above the fireplace for future generations. And makes an excellent Christmas, Bday, Father's Day present. Comes with a sheath to protect you in transit, or when using as a hammer, and is effective for small jobs, kindling, stripping bark, etc. As I found out it also keeps its edge for a good while. The trick is not to use it when you are so tired even putting your shoes on seems complicated (babies, sleep deprivation in my case). You'll be happy to know that as long as you miss the bone the fleshy bit of a thumb will grow back. I can't vouch for other fleshy parts though, so don't use it naked!

The best hatchet I've ever owned.
Used it already on a camping trip but this image was just me testing it to make some small sticks for the fire at home. Worked a treat and as a Ex-Scout leader I've had access and bought several hatchets for camping trips and I wish I'd bough one of these years ago. Noatks or scratch les on the axe and the sheath was fine on mine unlike a couple of the reviewers here and even though the sheath being damaged would have been a issue for me too, the hatchet is gonna get scratched anyway if your using it so I wasn't too bothered if it was but mine was fine anyway. Highly recommend.

Luck of the draw what you receive quality wise
Reading a number of reviews here it seems quite a few people have received poor quality axes. They're obviously churned out of the factory and I guess the QC could be better. Mine is actually fine so it's clearly luck of the draw what you receive. I've owned an Estwing hammer with the same leather wrapped handle for the past 35 years and it's still used regularly, so if this axe lasts anywhere near that time I'll be a very happy man. I'd agree with the comments regarding the sheath, it's not the best, but it does it's job in protecting the axe head when not in use.

I typically use a more primitive axe but they tend to wear out pretty quickly with heavy usage. This axe is more modern and built really well. Great for small chopping, shaving/trimming with the blade (which is super sharp), and hammering things with back side. It’s nice and heavy but not overly so, short enough that’s it’s easy to handle. Overall it’s super effective axe for small tasks, much better than your typical $10-20 camp axe from Walmart.

There is no better hatchet for the price. Estwing has been top American quality for as long as it has existed. You are getting a tool that will last beyond your life. I bought this when I was very drunk. It came in the mail. I wasn't expecting it. I've had it for a few years now and I can say I chopped down a tree, much to my brothers protest. That bitch came down. It was time. This hatchet made quick work of it. Now it sits by my bed for personal protection. Well, protection of myself and my guinea pig. The one and only Winston. Back to the hatchet. It feels good in the hand. Like you could really do some damage with it. To a tree or a zombie. I mean it's perfectly balanced and the leather handle will last forever. The reason I wanted an Estwing is because my dad had an Estwing hammer with a leather handle and it just felt really good and he always said it was a good hammer. So yeah, naturally I wanted what my dad said was good when it came to tools. I've had this hatchet 5 years and it has only taken one life. That of a tree to be clear. But it sits at my bedside. It will take a human life if need be. An Estwing hammer or hatchet with a leather hammer isn't just a tool. It's a work of art and a part of history. This is how thing used to be done. And last forever. When 'share holders' weren't a concern.
