I know this was not for younger kids, but as I home teach my preschooler I thought I would try it. My boy caught one so well and was happy that if he just learned one thing like "at" sound then he could read, cat, bat, fat, hat, etc. It gave him confidence and helped him learn. The lessons are so similar that after 3-4 I had to start tweeking them, so he wouldn't get bored, but I still used the main list of words. My boy is 4 1/2 and is reading books on his own now.

Great activity for struggling readers

Great book for teaching word families to children.

I love this book! It's so easy to reference, when looking for a specific work family needed to teach! Everything you need is there: the letters, the word families, & the reading passage(nursery rhyme).

I absolutely love the instructional lessons in this book. However the paired text is not appropriate for emerging readers and possibly some transitional readers. I love that they are classic rhymes though. I provide text selections from a-z or other resources as a companion to lessons. I use this book every week for my emergent reader intervention students.

I already had this book and wanted to get it for my teaching partner. I had gotten it years back and was afraid I couldn't find it. I found it and her copy looks better than mine.

This is a well-structured book. Each lesson has a plan, as well as the example for how to use the lesson. Despite its structured layout, I find I don't like the sequence of word families. The first lesson goes from -at and -an right into -an and -ash followed by -am, families which I find too complicated to introduce that early in the study of word families. Also, the letter indentification component seems to be out of place for students who are ready to learn word families. If you teach kindergarten, this book won't be usable until probably mid-year, and by the middle of the book, the lessons are easily first grade material. Overall, I prefer the sequence in "Words Their Way" much more to the one presented in this book. If you want a set of canned word family lessons, you'll probably like this book, although the repetitive structure would be boring to students after awhile and you will still need supplemental materials. You get lessons here, but almost no ready-to-use material (mini-books, word sorts, etc, are NOT included). I think there are better resources available.

It's a good read and in excellent condition also was sent before the date described, I am just refreshing all my knowledge in the classes I have taken before.
