Is this what school nurses in the 50s used to swab sore throats with?

No. The real Merthiolate has been banned in the U.S. This is missing the ingredient Thimersol. The only place I found the actual Merthiolate was on Ebay and it came from Viet Nam. The original is a fantastic antiseptic. Don't waste your money on this. It's just basically alcohol.

Is it clear in color?

No the tincture is not clear in color . It is orange. But lke I stated before I have both and the colorless one does not work like this tincture with color. I do not know why but if you are home or the cut is in a hidable place then by all means use the colored tincture for the best relief of the pain. The stinging is only in the orange colored one not the colorless for whatever reason and this is what stops the pain of a cut or abrasion. Years of experience here with merthiolate!
