Lansky Double-Sided Folding Diamond Knife Sharpener Paddle: Medium/Fine (280/600 Grit) - FP2860

I use Razor Sharpening wheels at the house which will give me a shaving edge but I needed something durable to use in the field (vs ceramic or a stone) so I picked one of these up. The hinge pins are plastic and the handle feels a little thin, but I dropped it on the floor several times (on purpose) with no ill effects. The medium/fine grit seems about right if you keep your edges in pretty good shape. The medium has enough bite to touch up a dinged axe and the fine will give a decent utility edge to a knife but probably won't bring it back up to shaving sharp. As it breaks in, the diamonds might "soften" I bit and allow for a little sharper edge. I have given it 4 stars for now but will update after continued use, if everything holds up well, it will certainly be good for 5. My only, very minor, complaint so far is that the handle closure leaves a small tab sticking out on either side when closed, no biggie, but it might hang up a little in a tight pocket, but at the same time, it might keep it from falling out of a loose one.

I bought this for outdoor use (camping, backpacking, a bug out bag item) and love the design of the folding handle. It's compact but so much easier and safer to use than trying to hold a 3-1/2" inch stone in your hand. It's a great item for the bug out bag because it doesn't require water or oil for sharpening. The medium side (280 grit) will bring a really dull blade back but the 600 grit side (fine) will restore an edge that just needs a little touching up. I like the Lansky products and this one lives up to their quality expectations. It's light but well made and perfect for sharpening knives in the woods.

The coarse grit is too coarse to be useful and the fine grit is not fine enough.

Diamond stones are decent. But the folding handle wont hold the sharpening steel firmly when used. Disappointed!!
