Excellent Resource for Literacy Instruction
This is an excellent resource for classroom teachers, reading specialists, reading coaches, and anyone else involved in literacy education. This book was recommended by "The Sisters" at their conference. I purchased the Kindle edition for my iPad, and it does have chapter links that work. The Kindle edition was more convenient for me to read, so I went for it despite what the one star review said. I'm glad that I did because the navigation is fine. Maybe the navigation has been improved since that reviewer purchased the book.

Great Book, but one sided presentation on struggling readers
I purchased the fourth edition to help me understand literacy challenges facing our school district. I found the book generally well written, engaging, and informative, and I strongly recommend it. Periodically, the authors interrupt the presentation by describing the tradecraft of an excellent teacher, making the concepts concrete. The editors have chosen Richard Allington to author chapter 4 on struggling readers. Evidently, Allington persists in his belief that there is no such thing as dyslexia, for the book conspicuously avoids any mention of the word. Elsewhere in the book, disputes in literacy are made transparent, so that students can understand the leading issues in literacy in their historical perspective. But the fourth edition perpetuates the conspiracy of silence in education and completely avoids any mention of the topic. By so doing, the book threatens to cripple serious students of reading by depriving them of important information.

Covers all topics!
This book is a must read for all educational professionals, from Elementary to the content specialists at the high school level. I also think parents should be more aware of how to help their children learn to read and develop a love of reading (let's face it, there are teachers who inadvertently cause our children to hate reading). This book covers a range of topics and would be helpful to all teachers and parents.

This book had useful information but it was not formatted in a user friendly way, nor was it written in a way that invites you to keep reading. It felt like plodding through mud.

Well done
I enjoyed this book very much. The scaffolded approach allowed me to build my knowledge of the content area and not feel overwhelmed. By the end, my confidence had grown immensely.

Great resource for all teachers
I really enjoyed reading this book! It's full of research that supports literacy instruction. All teachers will benefit from the research; as well as the lesson/activity ideas. They can be implemented in all content areas.

When you need the tool...
This was mandatory for my literacy class. It's readable, has some good information, but at the end of the day it reads like a textbook. Not super engaging, kind of pedantic in places. Not a pleasure read, but good if you need some theoretical background in the subject.
