Works well in small spaces
I really love this light. I originally got the Carex Daylight Classic Plus Lamp, which I also really loved. However, my partner was not loving the aesthetic of the Carex or how much space it takes up. We live in a small apartment, so if you have the space and don't want to spend as much money, I definitely recommend that one. This one works just as well but you can't adjust the light, unlike the Carex one. It's not a deal breaker but being able to adjust the light can help you acclimate if you've never used a light box before. What I love about this one besides the fact that it works well is that it's much more aesthetically pleasing and it's much easier to move around than the Carex. It's also pretty slim so it's easy to find space for it. It's more expensive but my partner and I split the cost (he really didn't like the Carex one). This has helped me regulate my sleep schedule. I think it's also helped with my mood but I won't really know until we're actually in winter.

The screw is white plastic. Bright lamp!
The screw is misleading and I think that's why some reviewers thought the screw was missing. It is the white plastic screw that comes attached on the base of the light box. Unscrew it and place the metal stand on the box. Tighten the screw in place with a coin. Be careful because the edges of the box are very sharp. This is my second day using this light box. I couldn't tell much on the first day. Then I realized that you need to be 17" from the light box. That is really close! I pulled out the tape measure and discovered it's much closer than is shown in that picture of the guy sitting at his desk. Now I'm sitting really close to the lamp while on my phone checking emails, and periodically changing my position so that both sides of my face have the advantage of being near the lamp. The instructions say not to look into the lamp very often...especially if you have light colored eyes (blue or green). So, I just take a quick glance every once in a while. So far I'm feeling like I have more energy...but I also drank caffeinated tea. So I can't say for sure. But, I do like the brightness of the light. It lights up the room pretty well, which is nice since I live in Portland, OR and it's always cloudy and raining, which keeps my home dimly light. Though, it's probably not a good idea to keep this light box on for very long periods of time since the instructions say that after 20,000 hours of use it will emit 15% less light, and should be replaced. It uses two 36 watt tubes that can be purchased from Northern Light Technologies. Oh one other thing...when you first turn on the light box it takes about three seconds before it turns on. Make sure to turn your head and look away from it because it's BRIGHT! I made the mistake of turning my head back towards the light box right when it turned on and almost fell over in shock. It's bright! ...can also be used for lighting up stuff you're trying to photograph.

Effective but Sort of Clunky Like Most Therapy Lights
I have used three different models of Northern Light Technologies for the past 25 years. They have been helpful when used between October and March. I am disappointed in the build quality with this latest model. It is nearly impossible to unscrew the plastic bolts to get inside, which you need to be able to do to change bulbs, due to their cheap plastic threads and mismatched holes. The previous models were a snap to remove. One issue with any fluorescent therapy light is the slow degradation of the bulbs over time so that they are not putting out the full 10,000 LUX. I wish there was a way to predict this or measure it since this is a very slow, barely noticeable decline. I think you just have to assume after 5-10 years they should be replaced. The set is not inexpensive, costing over $50.

Brighten Your Attitude!
This light checks all the squares for what someone with seasonal affective disorder needs to brighten each day. It really works if you use it daily. My daughter turns it on soon after she gets up in the morning and lets it shine while she gets dressed and does some needlework before she heads out for the rest of her day.

This is the best light available
HIGHLY recommend. I did extensive research and this is the one to buy if you want the real thing. My psychiatrist even recommended this one specifically. It is a $$$ investment, but really this is the last one I plan on ever getting again. You can replace the bulbs. My last model (Philips) had no way to access the bulbs. I am sitting in front of the light right now. Be forewarned you have to sit very close, follow the instructions. Your body needs the correct amount of lux for the right amount of time for this to work. So far it has seen me through the first part of Autumn with only a few depressive episodes. (I take meds as well.) I use the light from Labor Day to Spring Equinox. I find the bottom a little wobbly and think for this expensive and fragile a product it should have a more substantial base. You wouldn't want this somewhere it might be bumped. I have it one eye level table (a "TV Table") and don't move it from this spot. You really can't find a better one on the market.

You saw this on Wirecutter, didn't you?
Let me save you $195 - this is a metal box with two CFL bulbs in there, they even say you can buy these at a local light store and give you the model numbers: Philips PLL36W or Sylvania FT36DL.

Does the job (and a tip about the "clicking")
It'll take up a fair bit of space on your desk, but that's the necessary tradeoff for a light with sufficient intensity and coverage. Compared to other desk lights of this nature, this is my favorite I've tried. A number of reviewers have noted the "clicking" sound that the light makes when warming up and cooling down. The noise didn't bother me much, but I was curious to try to make it go away anyway, as it can continue for quite a while even after the light is off. I played around with the light a little, and ultimately was able to eliminate the noise completely simply by loosening the four screws on the front plate.

Update, Jan 2021 4 years later, this lamp still rocks my world. I keep it on my work desk and leave it on all morning. At one point I was leaving it on all day but that induced hyperactive energy (a bit like mania- haha basically I ended up too happy). The bulbs haven't burnt out. It's still running perfectly. I tell everyone about this lamp. One of the most impactful purchases I've made ever. *************************************************************** This lamp is amazing. It's truly bright and makes me feel like I'm sitting in a photo shoot.I use it at work, as I sit in a cubicle, far from windows. When I turn it off, my cubicle suddenly seems so dark. Colleagues continually walk by and comment how bright my cube is. At first they come in and complain that it hurts their eyes but I tell them to give it 30 seconds for their eyes to adjust and invariably, they all agree, the light is perfect and not too bright. I think, after 3 weeks of use that this is cheering me up and increasing my energy. I used it in the month of Dec. I will provide an update at the end of the winter to let you all know if it truly helped or not. Regardless, it's an amazingly bright lamp and for anyone who likes light, you will appreciate how illuminated your space is by this lamp. The photo I've posted shows the level of brightness, in relation to my Microsoft Surface, to it's right. One thing I wasn't expecting was that it's a bit thick, 2-3". I thought it was going to be thin, like an Ipad or something. Also, sadly there is no way to hang it. I really wanted to be able to hang it from my cubicle, pretending it was like a window but there is no hook or anything that would allow it to be hung. I called the company and they said they are looking at designing a similar lamp that can be hung from a wall etc which would be awesome. I selected this lamp after hours of research. I primarily chose it because it had the most contemporary appearance, is made in Quebec and it allows the user to be 10" away and still reap the light therapy benefits (unlike other lamps which require you to be awkwardly close to the lamp). Update, Apr 2017: this lamp definitely made last winter better. I actually missed the lamp when I was at home on the weekends (I set it up on my desk at work) and felt happier at work than at home (go figure, it definitely wasn't the job!). It's spring now and the days are longer so I will put the lamp away for now but will be certain to pull it out again in October. I think the price has come down a bit too!

I purchased this light in November 2016, and it's been going strong and keeping me sane every winter since. The light sits in my living room next to the bedroom. This year, I've set it up on a timer (with a smart plug) scheduled to turn on a few minutes after my alarm. With my bedroom door open, it really looks like sunlight flooding through the apartment. It's made waking up loads easier, and instead of a mad dash to get out the door to the office, I get to spend more leisurely time awake and sitting at the recommended distance from the light with my coffee and a crossword.

Highly recommand this lamp! It works really as expected and delivers fantastic results. It's on the pricey side but totally worth it.

Ok, So i received this therapy lightbox a little less than a month ago and I'd have to say that it works wonders for me, I initially bought it to fix my sleeping patterns and also as well as adressing one of the tools that can help fight against depression. For there are many ways to fight against depression but light therapy is definitely a factor to take into consideration if you spend too much time indoors or if the sun is just absent during months of winter. It is ill advised for this too be used for more than 30 mins (as some M.D.'s have suggested on youtube) for it can have the opposite effect and make you more depressed although do your own research about that to know more on that. I would suggest you go see a youtube video of a doctor called Stephen Llardi who has developed a program/system with his team that addresses several different factors for fighting depression, where one of those factors is that of the necessity of light exposure to fight depression. So he has a video where he talks about light therapy boxes for 11mins and 33 seconds, anyway go check it out on youtube the title of the video on youtube is: "TLC Elements Series: Light Exposure". If you want to see his introductory video to his system and program, then check out his introductory video on youtube which is entitled: "Depression is a disease of civilization: Stephen Ilardi at TEDxEmory". This theory is interesting in the sense that they based the development of the program that they created based on research accumulated by Anthropologist Edward Shieffelin who extensively studied the lifestyle of the Aboriginal Kaluli People of Papa New Guinea and noticed that the rate of depression found in this aboriginal group was drastically lower than the rate of depression found in the advanced society of north american urban areas. To conclude this light therapy still works for me and provides me with more energy than a coffee can deliver and also has the ability to reset your target bedtime for more information on resetting your target bed time, go watch the light therapy video that I suggested earlier. This Light therapy is also amazing because of how huge it is and really gives me a feeling of having the sun in my room. One more thing this light does not have a yellowish hue like the sun does although I wish it did, it does not but with 10,000 lux light the color hue might not be possible but really regardless this thing is amazing. Nor does any other light therapy box offer a yellowish hue to my knowledge and the yellowish hue in in the pictures of other light therapy lights does not guarantee it. Anyway this is the best bang for your buck in my opinion, hope i've benn helpful with the info have a nice day!!
