Yes, you can use it with windows. Do a google search from CGMiner for Gridseed. You need to load Winusb driver as well. I have mine running on a windows 7 machine mining Dogecoin. Stop laughing :)

Q: Does the fan run when only mining for Scrypt based coins? Can it be switched off if not needed? How loud is it?

The fan is wired directly to the miner, and will run when it is powered up. However, the fan is only actually necessary if/when you're mining SHA or SHA and Scrypt. You will spend more money on electricity than you'll make mining in either dual mode or straight SHA, so your best bet will be to remove the fan and mine Scrypt only.

Q: Can this work with MultiMiner (which uses BFGMiner on the backend)?

Yes this can work with Multiminer and BFGMiner. Depends on if you want to use it in dual mode or single mode. After using multi and bfgminer. I perferred BGFminer of multi because multi seems to have a lot of issues connecting and staying connected. But could have been I did not spend enough time with the programm and just fell back to what I already knwe best and was working.

No it will only work for Bitcoin / Litecoin or any other crypto running the SHA265 or Scrypt mining algorithm like Doge coin. Why not just buy a GPU and mine Vertcoin? Vertcoin is an easy entry into crypto.
