i have an internal 5.25" DVD/CD drive that i wanted to use, but my new case doesn't have any slots for it. I bought this thinking that it probably wouldn't work and I'd have to return it, but it worked great! Drive is detected just fine. I considered subtracting a star because the USB (which is C and A, very nice) that goes comes the unit is VERY short. I'm guessing 6"? Maybe fine if it's sitting right next to a laptop on a desk, but is very inconvenient for my PC use. I'll buy a USB C extension cable to work around this.

This has been working great for me. When connecting HDD, I plug in the adapter to the drive, then the power, then connect the USB cable to the PC. I believe the instructions say power last, but that didn't make sense to me, so I have done the USB end last and it works every time.

I bought this because I read a review that said it worked with their optical drive. I can confirm it does. I have it working with an extra bluray drive I have on hand. I left 4 starts because the usb cord is a bit short. Using this on my pc's front I/O means I have to have the bluray drive facing sideways. It works as it's designed, which is the most important part. The USB-C power is a wonderful addition.

Note: I am reviewing the version that includes the power adapter. This is the version that works with the widest variety of drives. I use these at home and at work when I need to access a SATA hard drive quickly for troubleshooting, repair, or just to access data on the drive. If you use this on a newer computer with USB 3 or Thunderbolt, it accesses the drive data very quickly. I like this version of the hard drive adapter because it is fast and works with all the SATA drives I've tried it with. (Some adapters only work with the 2.5" drives.) To me, this is easier to use than the toaster style drive adapters. I've used it to read/write data, format/partition drives, clone drives, and boot from drives and it's handle all of those functions well. Only thing I'm unsure about is if there is a limit for the drive size that you can access with this adapter. I don't think there is, but I can't remember if I've tried it with anything larger than 2TB.

- The manual says you need to have a partition on it already. I took a brand new 4tb WD Blue drive out of the sealed box and plugged it in and had no trouble - I opened Windows Disk Management and it already was aware of it. Picked a letter and GPT and formatted away. - I was able to very quickly copy ~ 1.5gb of large files in no time using the usb-a adapter. Much quicker than a flash drive, much quicker than over the network. (basic windows file transfer was reporting ~150 mb/s, fwiw) - the little usb-c to usb-a integrated adapter is pretty neat. Feels quite solid. - same minor complaint as others - usb cable is too short! even like another 3 inches would be good, 6 would be great. Not enough to knock off a star, but close. I just put the drive on top of its own box and it raised it enough to reach the lowest usb3 ports in the back
