Do i need anything other than this package (cable + mounter) + a 2.5" ssd to replace my current desktop dell xps 8500 hhd?

No you should not. Basically, you will install your new 2.5 inch drive in the mounting kit. Everything you need is there. You will then unplug your existing 3.5 inch drive remove it and replace it with the mounted 2.5 inch assembly. Unplug your computer before starting. That's it for the physical part. Then you need to install OS etc.. on your new drive.

How long is the sata cable?

hello, thanks for your good questions. it is 38cm for this sata cable.

One photo shows one end of the sata cable has a right angle connector but another photo shows both ends are straight. Which is correct?

I received one end of the sata cable has a right angle another side straight.

would this work if I put it in my open 2.5" laptop slot?

The mounting kit is for installing a 2.5@ drive into a 3.5” bay on a PC. A 2.5” drive will fit into your laptop slot without a bracket.
