How is the blade packaged? (box? clamshell?) Is the manufacturer's packaging suitable for safe storage of the blade when not in use?

It comes in a clamshell-style plastic package and is absolutely appropriate for storage when not using it. I generally use the sharp/smooth blade, so I use the package to store the serrated blade.

No, it does not. Remember, the screw is reverse threaded.

Use the non serrated blade. You only use the serrated blade for cheese or bread. I also make homemade bacon, it works great!
