Very Sharp
This is a great chief knife at a great price. The quality is very solid and the knife is extremely sharp. The design and markings on the knife makes it look absolutely beautiful. The knife is easy to handle and grips well for safety. A must have in the kitchen and doesn't break the bank.

Excellent Knife! Best I've ever Found!
I received this knife a year ago in a set of Chef's knives to review as part of the Vine program and have received numerous compliments on it over the past year from visitors who joined me in cooking during their visit. My mother-in-law in particular exclaimed that it was a wonderful knife and that she would love one, should I remember to whisper that information to whoever picked her name in our family Christmas gift drawing. Well, of course I could not forget that, as she is rarely so impressed with anything and isn't it nice to known exactly what someone wants. Luckily I was the one who drew her name this year so no conspiracy was required on my part! I was so very pleased when this arrived and I observed that it was indeed the same wonderful knife that came in the set I received: beautiful Damascus steel, perfect balance and weight, sharp enough to cut paper. It came in a lovely box, sturdy enough for storage, pretty enough to give without wrapping. It also included a nice sheaf for storage. Over a year after having received my first one of these knives, this is still my favorite knife, and I am very happy to report that the rest of my family is also very happy to be receiving it as a gift. I could not recommend this more highly.

Excellent chef's knife
Razor sharp out of the box. Now it's the knife everybody wants to use! We have a number of other knives from this company (nakiri, vegetable cleaver, 6" knife, paring knife). All but the paring knife are used constantly. I keep them "reasonably" sharp with a few strokes on a strop before every use. They can go for several months without sharpening, a statement I'm sure some purists would scoff at. A high quality Japanese water stone >=5000 grit is essential for sharpening. This chef's knife has nice clearance between the handle and the edge of the blade, making chopping easy.It excels at mincing fresh herbs. Its usage in our household is similar to the nakiri, as an all purpose vegetable chopper slicer, but it is better suited to slicing large cuts of meat than the nakiri. I would suggest the chef's knife as a good start to a set, followed by the 6" knife for cutting open bell-peppers, small fruit, button mushrooms, etc. I still prefer the nakiri for slicing long vegetables such as eggplants and summer squash - and of course, filleting fish. The vegetable cleaver greatly eases the job of handling tough root vegetables, pineapples and other large fruit, but doesn't get much use outside of that.

Not as pictured. Still a knife and does what knives do.
UPDATE: KYOKU reached out to me regarding my concerns mentioned below. They addressed my issues sufficiently and ensured me that they would bring them to their QC.I have also had more time with this knife and I am finding it to be a great knife to use as my primary. Because my Wüstof's bolster extends across the blade, I find myself using my KYOKU often because the heel comes to a point. The angle of the blade leads to it being very sharp and it has been holding up well and not dulling.+1 star for great customer service and for the update after a couple weeks of more use.Original: The "Damascus" work on this knife looks nothing like the pictures. The shape contrast between dark and light is non-existant. Highly disappointed as I was hoping for a quality knife to show off. That being said, it's a sharp knife with good balance. It's slightly heavier than my Wüsthof Classic. Makes quick work out of slicing and dicing. Considering I have my primary, the Wüsthof, this knife will serve only as a backup.

Great sharp knife!
Bought this for my husband for Christmas. He was shocked how easily this cut and loved the heavy weight of this knife. I will buy additional sizes on this brand.
