My wife's grandmother made this booze back in the 50's claimed that it very high in alcohol - can I use this hydrometer to either prove or disprove it

This hydrometer will test it for you. You could also do 4 shots and then try to walk a straight line.

Can this be used to test the alchohol in wine ? Thanks

It's typically for distilled spirits. This is the one you need for wine. http://www.amazon.com/Hydrometer-Triplescale/dp/B0064O94I0/ref=sr_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1384175905&sr=1-1&keywords=hydrometer

Can i use this to test homemade hard cider?

Yes it will work fine if all the sugar has been fermented out or the cider has been distilled. If the cider tastes sweet, the instrument will not read accurately. You should take your readings before you add sugar to sweeten. A triple scale hydrometer might be better, so that you know what your Original Gravity (OG) reading was and what your Final Gravity (FG)was. If you started with 14% sugar OG and you now have 0% sugar (FG) you have made 14% alcohol.

We make herbal medicines that require an alchol base like Vodka or Everclear and at times need to test the proof or alcohol content will this work?

Yes, as long as the product you are proofing doesn't contain any solids - this should work for you.
