Get ready to rock 'n' roll with the hit screen rendition of the Broadway musical look at '50s teen life. Can greaser gang leader Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Australian good girl Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) continue their summertime romance when Sandy shows up at Rydell High for the start of the school year? With Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, Eve Arden, and Frankie Avalon. Songs include "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," "You're the One That I Want," and the title track. 110 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo Surround, French Dolby Digital stereo Surround; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; featurettes; deleted scenes; extended scenes; interviews; photo gallery; theatrical trailers. Review: Get The Bluray! It's Worth It!! - The sound on the bluray replicates beautifully the stunning sound from theaters in 1978! I saw it twice at the movies back then, and I have always felt (like "Purple Rain") that the dynamic presence of the music was the film's finest feature. Awesome picture too. It really is like going back in time and enjoying it on the big screen. A bounty of amazing extras including a very informative commentary with the director and the choreographer. I think you'll be surprised at how important the choreographer's insights are. There's a really interesting Elvis insight along the way too. Listen for it! I won't spoil it. Other extra goodies are b/w clips of deleted scenes, and the sing-a-long program is really cool, even if all you want to do is enjoy the songs ala carte. But the WOW of wows is the 25 year reunion party footage, including terrific performances of songs by Olivia, John, and cast. Very special, and my goodness, Olivia sounds great! I worked in radio in 1978 and played the heck out of the Grease 45's of the day. Unfortunately, due to the lyrics, we couldn't play "Greased Lightning" ( except for a doctored up version a colleague altered with strategically placed beeps!). This great Travolta moment should have hit the top ten, and I am sure it would have if the words were G-rated. Too bad. I always have regretted that. "Grease" is kind of a strange cocktail. So beloved by all ages, including young kids. Yet there's many unsuitable-for-kids lines, lyrics, gestures, inuendos, etc.. I think the PG rating was very lenient. I'd say PG-13 would be much more realistic. Personally, I think the prerequisite Greaser feel could've been scripted and sung more gently. Still, a huge favorite movie of mine, and millions worldwide. I'm hopelessly devoted. Review: Thank you - Great movie

A great musical!!
I don't know why I never saw this movie before now. Wasn't much of a musical fan I suppose. But this was on sale on Amazon and I'd never seen it, so I ordered it on DVD. Wow! I was amazed at how good it was. Naturally I'd been hearing the music forever, but never in context. It was sweet, the costumes and characters of teens in the 50s a little alien to me, but it all worked. Was blown away with Frankie Avalon and Beauty School Drop Out and Edd Burns in the only other production I'd seen him in since 77 Sunset Strip. The costumes and the color were so vivid and eyepopping compared to the color schemes of later decades. It was a very enjoyable surprise, but now I have those songs running though my head all day long!.

"Grease" is just really good fun
What is it about "Grease" that stands the test of time? John Travolta's dancing? Olivia Newton-John's singing? Both were great but I think "Grease" remains popular with new generations of fans because it's just really good fun. The boys are caricatures of teens in the Fifties and early Sixties; the girls are stereotypes, the teachers and administrators are cartoonish and the plot is - well - pretty thin but, somehow, it all comes together. The cast was, if you think about it, pretty remarkable. Travolta and Newton-John were the headliners but Stockard Channing is no slouch when it comes to giving great performances and the late Jeff Conaway had a pretty successful career before drugs and alcohol took their toll on him. Eve Arden, Sid Caesar, and Alice Ghostley were well established actors and comedians before they signed onto the cast and, long before Travolta and "The Fonz" were popular, Edd Byrnes was a teen idol on "77 Sunset Strip." The script was pretty risque for the Seventies with overt references to underage sex and teen pregnancy but that didn't stop teens and their parents from enjoying the movie then. Today, those references are anything but daring: A little bewildering to teens who have grown up knowing about birth control and a little nostalgic for parents and grandparents who remember when "getting to second base" was a really big deal. It's not high art by any means: It never pretended to be that. But it's fun, the choreography is wonderful, and the songs are still played today: Newton-John's "Hopelessly in Love with You," for example, gets played at a lot of wedding receptions. And that makes it a 5-star movie.

Not what I expected
Not what I was expecting when I ordered. I thought I was getting the US movie, but on the back of the case it said it was from Germany. Also, the characters on front look like cartoons.

The original high school musical
Glee ? No please, this is real musical, this is real high school, this is real movie. Henry Winkler, who became a sensation as "Fonzie" on Happy Days, was considered for the role of Danny Zuko. However, he turned down the role for fear of being typecast. Susan Dey and Deborah Raffin were the first choices for the role of Sandy (Dey declined the role after her manager advised against it). Marie Osmond later claimed on Larry King Live that she had been also been offered the role but declined "on moral grounds" though she later admitted this to be untrue. Set in high school, most of the principal cast were way past their teenage years. When filming began in June 1977, John Travolta was 23, Olivia Newton-John was 28, Stockard Channing was 33, Jeff Conaway was 26, Barry Pearl was 27, Michael Tucci was 31, Kelly Ward was 20, Didi Conn was 25; Jamie Donnelly was 30, and Annette Charles was 29. Only Dinah Manoff, Lorenzo Lamas, and Eddie Deezen, all 19, were still teenagers. The film was released in Spain and Latin America as Brillantina (Brilliantine) - because its English title translated as "Grasa" or "fat" in Spanish.

Imperdibile
