Why are the jaws tapered the wrong way? It looks like they will easily slip off.

I used this for narrow openings and for small bearings and my Tractor Steering wheel as a puller. Jaws are reversible. Hope this helps.

What is the thread pitch of the bolts?

No idea but it doesn't matter because they are specifically designed for the tool.
