Beauty will save the world
Like all books from Dostoyevsky, The Idiot's focus is on the misery brought on by a world made unnecessarily complicated by societal constraints, economy, class, religion, etc. A childlike protagonist in Prince Myshkin finds himself lost in this world as he tries to right every wrong that he sees around, eventually ending in a tragedy. Dostoyevsky (also in The Brothers Karamazaov) wants people to learn from children: how they are innocent, simple and forgiving. It may be right to criticise this philosophy for being too naive, which the writer himself showcases in the downfall of Myshkin. But this downfall was the result of people around Prince Myshkin not adhering to his own philosophy. Myshkin was like Jesus Christ if he came back to earth. But what good will his presence be if his modern disciples fail to follow his own teachings of unconditional love? Anyone who reads this book will come away from it shocked, depressed yet hopeful that they can be the change in the world which Dostoyevsky wants. If you find the book depressing, follow it up with Brothers Karamazov where similar themes are tackled in a more positive and hopeful way.
