Edition Wilhelm Furtwaengler

I cannot recommend this release enough. Furtwangler, live, in relatively decent sound: what more could you ask? First, the sound. The remastering, in the attempt capture and convey every last bit of sound in the original tapes, can initially come off as overly shrill. I suspect that this can be remedied by the judicious use of an equalizer; as it was I quickly grew used to the sound and simply reveled in the performances. And what performances! I hear a clear difference between Furtwangler live and in the recording studio: both are amazing, but I sense a greater sense of interpretive freedom and risk-taking in his live performances that I find very attractive. Equally of interest to those who have heard his wartime recordings is that these post-war recordings have a greater feeling of lightness and inner peace than their predecessors, which often seem far more driven (at least to my ears). There are duplications (Beethoven 3, 5 & 6, Schubert 8), but with great conductors this is never a problem as the insights are endlessly fascinating. What do I consider the highlights? The first Eroica, with the horn trio capturing perfectly the spirit of the hunt; both Pastorals (I have never cared much for the piece, but Furtwangler kept me spellbound); the Bach and Handel, which revealed hidden depths modern performance styles hide from us; and a Bruckner 8 that left me stunned (I thought I had heard them all, but this was simply in a class by itself: for instance, the realization in the trios that Bruckner was an Austrian, not German composer). This set is now part of my permanent "go to" list;. I suspect it will be part of yours, too.

I have been collecting Furtwangler recordings for over 40 years. Let me simply state that these are among the very best transfers of these performances I have ever heard. At this price it is a steal. There is one flaw. The order of the movements of the Bruckner 8th are incorrect. It is a problem that can be easily fixed in ITunes or if you burn CDs. Wonderful performances, the Wagner, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms perormances are particularly special. A reminder of a style of conducting that is gone forever.

I began by listening to select discs out of excitement and now have heard this set front to back, mostly with pure delight. That these are organized as real performances makes them even better. This isn't a set with three Eroicas in a row; it gives you the sense of excitement of going to the theater on some cold winter night in post-war Berlin. Most of these are truly magnificent performances that showcase one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, as well as a method of music making that has now largely fallen to the period-practice HIPster taliban. Moreover, I have no doubt that many (maybe most or even all) of these are the best transfers and remasters available of these particular recordings.Nonetheless, with extended listening I have found that my head really starts to pound and my molars grind back and forth. The remastering is not done lightly; the recordings feel remastered to within an inch of their lives. The high end is particularly strong, metallic, and artificial sounding. At times it is difficult to tell what the instrument is because the wave forms are so similar. The middle is weak. The bass would be weak, but turning it up really brings out incredible depth at the low end, a wonderful surprise today when most string bass and tympani players face under-employment.The impact of the Audite remastering builds over time. After four hours of listening, I just have to stop and put something else on because my head hurts so much. Try one disc, one single glorious concert at a time. For a more natural--if subdued and slightly lost to the ravages of time sound--consider the Praga Digital series of Furtwängler releases. There are some interesting nearly exact performances, such as Bruckner's 8th recorded in the studio one day before the live concert.

This product appears to be identical to “Edition Wilhelm Furtwängler - The Complete RIAS Recordings,” which Amazon is also selling (currently at a different price). Here is my review of “Edition Wilhelm Furtwängler - The Complete RIAS Recordings”:There are three reasons why you should purchase this set of 12 CDs of Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, prepared by Audite from the archival tapes of broadcasts by RIAS (Radio in the American Sector of Germany) between 1947 and 1954. (1) Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886-1954) was one of the greatest conductors of the past 100 years, the era of recorded music – in the opinion of many, the greatest. “Furtwängler possessed the great secret of proportion…He understood how to interpret [the smallest] phrases, themes, sections, movements, and entire symphonies as artistic unities.” [Paul Hindemith] “It is safe to say that never in his life did Furtwängler give a routine performance.” [Harold Schonberg] (2) Good recorded sound is essential for revealing those details of phrasing and intonation that distinguish a Furtwängler performance and leave you saying, “Of course! Now I finally understand what the composer intended.” (3) These 12 CDs, thanks to the quality of the original tapes and whatever magic the Audite engineers applied, have the best sound I have ever heard in Furtwängler recordings; although they date back to 1947-1954, they are comparable to modern recordings, except for not being stereo. The 12 CDs concentrate on Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms, plus a glorious Bruckner 8th, plus three living (in 1954) German composers. The CDs present the actual broadcasts over those 7 years; thus, there are two performances each of Beethoven’s 3rd, 5th, and 6th, Schubert’s 8th, and Brahms’ 3rd symphonies, but none, for example, of Beethoven’s 7th or 9th or Brahms’ 1st or 2nd. The “EMI Classics References” sets of Furtwängler conducting the complete Beethoven and Brahms symphonies will round out your collection and the Music & Arts CD of Furtwängler’s 1954 Lucerne performance of Beethoven’s 9th is also a gem. Finally, three personal reasons why I treasure this set: (1) The Schubert 9th, taking into account the composition itself and this performance, is possibly the most beautiful music I have ever heard – from the hymn-like introduction; to the heartbreak of the 2nd movement (17:04 here yet not a second too long because Furtwängler will have you concentrating on every note); to the crisp, volatile scherzo; to the explosive, life-affirming exultation of the finale that will make you swing your arms. (2) Mendelssohn’s Overture to a Midsummer Night’s Dream is Mendelssohn as you may perhaps have never heard him before: mysterious…creative…daring. It may also remind you that Furtwängler courageously programmed this overture in Berlin in 1934. (3) A 13th CD is a Q&A session (in German) of Furtwängler with music students in Berlin. He discusses various compositions with them in a down-to-earth way; interesting and useful information.

I don't disagree with the other reviewers' opinions of the performances and transfers ( though I take issue with the gentleman from Amazon.com who thinks the movements of the Bruckner 8 are in the wrong order - in my box and book they aren't, but perhaps he was thinking of another disc). But Bruckner is where I start, because there's a minor issue of presentation. The only information on the discs themselves is the sequence number (1-13). No information at all appears on the sleeves. The box has an alphabetical list by composer on the back, printed in mid-grey on black and as near as dammit illegible. So any purchaser needs to be warned - don't mislay the booklet, which is indeed excellent, but really, also, completely indispensible.So I picked my first disc at random, since my second-hand box had No 4 on top of the pile. I saw myself dipping into the disc for 5 minutes or so, as a taster. 75 or so minutes later (it felt like no more than ten minutes) I was recovering from a quite astonishing Bruckner Eighth, which for a while I could not convince myself I wasn't hearing for the first time though I think I shall have to admit it was probably the 1949 performance which came out in the sixties in an Electrola LP box at one movement to a side and which in those days sounded bass-light and somehow less extreme in the scherzo tempi than this one does. Not only does the concentration not flag, the whole thing combines an almost improvisatory freedom with a wary observance of structure and proportion and richness of tone (given the date) rare in other Furtwangler recordings even of live events. By the finale I was almost convinced that it wasn't just a new, previously unheard Furtwangler performance, but of a new recension by the composer of a previously much longer original Eighth Symphony in which whole development episodes had been replaced and codas foreshortened. I had heard Klemperer's cut version in the RFH in the late sixties, which was really foreshortened and unbalanced, but thiswasn't cut - it just came to an end when it was supposed to. The lack of applause hits you like a sledgehammer.A brief exploration of the following disc, with the earlier of the two Brahms symphony No 3 recordings , which was on an HMV LP, sounding fresh, with perfectly balanced woodwind, presented a finale that this time works brilliantly (he apparently preferred his 1954 recording) and again at completely new and individual tempi (an illusion - I've known it for over 50 years, but the transfer from the original source is as good as that, an effect you can also find in repeating some of the recordings of Furtwangler's friend and collaborator, Edwin Fischer). The Fortner concerto which completes the disc (the Wagner items which ended the concert have to be found elsewhere in the box) is, shall we say, militant. Even with it, these two discs are individually each worth the price of the whole box. I may well have to talk myself into throwing away the entire Membran foundation-stone of him in every work of which a Furtwangler recording survives. I'll probably fail, but if I ever get a chance I'll suggest to Pope Francis he passes the one Angela Merkel gave him to a charity shop. This is unique material and once bought......

The BELLUM, the BONUM and the VERUMJust amazing, astonishing, fascinating … I could get on searching qualifying and descriptive epithets, but I am afraid I would be unable to find enough quantity of them and sufficient ly descriptive of the greatness and majesty that Furtwängler’s performances accomplish.As usual in Furtwängler’s Beethoven, the conductor reaches the zenith absolutely. Listening to his Beethoven, one comes into ecstasy and touches plenitude, feeling the presence of Glory.Do not miss it, please. Happiness is guaranteed. Promised.

Die RIAS-Konzerte Wilhelm Furtwänglers von 1947 bis 1954 als Gesamtausgabe – das klingt doch zunächst mal richtig gut. Noch besser wird es, wenn man liest, daß dafür die Originalbänder restauriert wurden, da bis dahin wohl oft Radiomitschnitte als Grundlage für Veröffentlichungen genutzt wurden. Furtwänglers Spätwerk mit den Berliner Philharmonikern in dieser Zusammenstellung lockte mich damals unwiderstehlich.Das Problem dieser Zusammenstellung ist auch nach über vier Jahren, solange besitze ich die Box jetzt, das Klangbild. Schon der Auftakt, Beethovens sechste Sinfonie von 1947, kommt mit einem zurückgenommenen, hintergründigen Klangbild daher. Fast scheint es so, als habe Audite sich nicht getraut, den Luftballon richtig aufzublasen. Man könnte auch sagen, die Akustik wirkt seltsam ausgebremst. Alles klingt irgendwie transparent, fast zu klar und ein wenig steril und trocken. Der Kommentar eines zufälligen "Mithörers": "Klingt aber blechern!" Allgemein habe ich gleichalte Aufnahmen schon in besseren Bearbeitungen gehört.Daher bin ich dazu übergangen, manche Aufnahmen dieser Box nach Möglichkeit durch bessere zu ersetzen. So bekommt man die beiden Beethoven-Sinfonien (Nr. 5 und 6) von 1947, Furtwänglers erstes Berliner Nachkriegskonzert, bei  Tahra  in einer angenehmeren Version. In derselben Box befindet sich auch eine schönere Umsetzung der Eroica von 1952. Daneben habe ich Bruckners Achte von 1949, Händels Concerto grosso Op. 6/5, Mendelssohns Sommernachtstraum-Ouvertüre von 1947 und das Tristan-Vorspiel von 1954 in der Veröffentlichung der  Vermächtnis-Box  vorgezogen.Die künstlerische Qualität der Aufnahmen selbst mindert das nicht! Die läßt sich bei Furtwängler und "seinen" Berlinern kaum in Worte fassen. Allein das ist schon ein mehr als überzeugendes Argument für den Kauf dieser Box.Auch hat Audite sich viel Mühe mit der Edition und dem Begleitheft, das in deutscher und englischer Sprache vorliegt, gegeben. Die edel anmutende, in Grautönen gehaltene stabile Papp-Box mit Furtwänglers goldener Unterschrift auf der Front beinhaltet 13 CDs in kleinen Pappschubern. Die Aufnahmen sind auf zwölf Tonträger verteilt, während die letzte CD als Bonus den Mitschnitt eines Colloquiums mit Furtwängler an der Berliner Hochschule für Musik enthält.Letztlich schmälert nur der trockene Klang das Hörvergnügen, das die Furtwänglerischen Interpretationen eigentlich immer bieten. Die akustische Aufarbeitung der Bänder und damit ihre Präsentation ist jedoch Geschmackssache! Ich habe mich wegen der überragenden Zusammenstellung deshalb für vier Sterne entschieden und möchte Interessierten nur folgendes ans Herz legen:Drum prüfe, wer sich ewig bindet, ob sich nicht was Bessres findet!Der Inhalt:- Bach: Orchestersuite Nr. 3 (24.10.1948)- Beethoven: Sinfonie Nr. 3 (20.06.1950 & 08.12.1952), Sinfonie Nr.5 & 6 (25.05.1947 & 23.05.1954), Violinkonzert [Y. Great overall but I think I think the earlier Beethoven duplicates on the LP version were unnecessary (I think the later versions from '52-'54 are the definitive recordings). Would have been nice to see some of the omitted material that was present on the CD version (Handel etc...) show up on the LP version. But to good see Brahms, Bruckner and Wagner on the LP version.

Il meglio del meglio, esperienza unica: Fürtwangler come non lo avete mai ascoltato. Qualità audio elevatissima per queste registrazioni dal vivo.

Furtwengler expresses Beethoven in the most artistic way, calmly, beautifully and mysteriously, like the wind blowing in the plains.

Wonderful remastering of amazing recordings!

Es esta edición de Audite, del año 2009, uno de los documentos imprescindibles de Furtwangler. Nos encontramos ante una amplia muestra del arte del Maestro en estas grabaciones realizadas para la RIAS, entre los años 1947-1954, con la Filarmónica de Berlin. Todas las interpretaciones son en directo en el Titania Palast, excepto la obertura de Gluck (pista 6 del CD 7) que procede del Schiller-Theater.Los trabajos de remasterización llevados a cabo, como ya se ha publicado, son espléndidos, y aunque ya todas estas versiones habían sido publicadas por distintos sellos, entre ellos Tahra, merece claramente la pena la nueva adquisición debido a que en todos los casos el sonido se ha mejorado, cualquiera que sea la procedencia de las ediciones anteriores.Significar que todas las interpretaciones tienen un interés supremo. Puntualizo en cada Cd lo que me parece más resaltable.CD 1.-Sinfonías nº 6 y 5 de Beethoven (25-05-1947).El famoso concierto del reencuentro en Berlín, conocido de las anteriores ediciones de Tahra. Audite nos presenta un concierto nuevo, con una restauración donde incluso varían las tímbricas. Es reconocida esta 5º como posiblemente la mejor de Furtwangler, la más profunda y terrorífica; a lo que quiero añadir la sexta en ese grupo de pastorales privilegiadas. Es sorprendente, con esta claridad sonora, percibir como Furtwangler disecciona el más leve matiz de las partituras, escuchándose voces nuevas que antes nos pasaban desapercibidas. Emocionante de verdad.CD 2.-Obertura Op. 21 de Mendelssohm, concierto para violín de Beethoven (Menuhin, ambos del 28-09-1947), y Suite nº 3 de Bach (24-10-1948).El Concierto de Beethoven es del mismo año, 1947, que el conocido, con el propio Menuhin, de Lucerna, editado por Testament. El que nos ocupa, aun con esta remasterización, sale mal parado si lo comparamos con el famoso de Emi, de mayo de 1953, en el Kingsway Hall de Londres, con la Philharmonia y el mismo violinista. Es el de Londres más grandioso, de superior regulación dinámica y amplitud sonora, y sigue teniendo mejor sonido (Emi, Great Recordings of the Century).CD 3.-Sinfonía nº 8 de Schubert y 4ª de Brahms (24-10-1948).La 4ª de Brahms es la conocida de la integral de Emi, una de las grandes versiones de la obra, por no decir la cúspide absoluta. Ni que decir tiene que el sonido de ambas se ha mejorado, y que la "incompleta" de Schubert no le va a la zaga a la conocida de Emi, con la WPO, de 19-21/01/1950.CD 4.-Sinfonía nº 8 de Bruckner (15-03-1949).Una de las grandes octavas de Bruckner. La mayoría de la crítica prefiere la famosa de 1944, particularmente no lo tengo tan claro. En esta el sonido mejora ligeramente y la tensión irrefrenable de aquella da paso a una mayor reflexión y solemnidad.CD 5.-Obertura Manfred, de Schumann; Sinfonía nº 3 de Brahms, y concierto para violin de Fortner -Gehard Taschner, violin- (18-12-1949).Primera duda: la 3ª de Brahms de la integral de Emi es también del Titania Palast, del 8-12-1949; la presente es del día 18 (¿error de transcripción, 8 por 18, o son dos conciertos distintos?). De lo que no cabe ninguna duda, sea o no la misma, es que la presente es de concepto idéntico a la otra, observándose unas diferencias de tempi que oscilan entre los 4 ó 5 segundos por movimiento, excepto en el último donde la de Emi es 11'' más lenta. Estas diferencias mínimas pueden deberse a otras cuestiones técnicas. La presente mejora un poco el sonido.CD 6.-Wagner, Trauermarsch y Die Meistersinger...(19-12-1949); Händel, Concerto gosso Op. 6, nº 10; Variaciones Haydn, de Brahms; y Concierto para Orquesta de Hindemith (20-06-1950).El Wagner, como cabía esperar, profundo y grandioso. Lo mismo que las variaciones Haydn. En ambos casos el sonido es aceptable, ligeramente inferior al de los extractos, o misma obra, recogidas en ediciones Emi del propio Furtwangler con la WPO.CD 7.-Sinfonía nº 3 de Beethoven (20-06-1950), Alceste de Gluck (05-09-1951) y Concerto grosso Op. 6, nº 5, de Händel (27-04-1954).La nº 3 de Beethoven no la conocía. La tenía editada Tahra, Ref. FURT 1030. Nos encontramos con las características típicas de Furtwangler, aunque no sea este el Furt más místico. Es una versión que, al menos el primer movimiento, me parece similar a la de la integral Emi, del mismo año, con la WPO. ¿El sonido?. Tengo dudas. Puede ser ligeramente superior el de Emi (hay que recordar que la 3ª con mejor sonido por Furtwangler siempre ha sido la de la integral de Emi, de estudio).CD 8.-Obertura el Cazador Furtivo (C.M.V.Weber); Hindemith, sinfonía "Die Harmonie der Welt" (08-12-1952, el mismo concierto de la famosa 3ª de Beethoven, del CD 9).CD 9.-Sinfonía nº 3 de Bethoven (08-12-1952); Rosamunda (Ob.) de Schubert (15-09-1953); y Blacher, Musik für Orchester, Op.10 (27-04-1954).Con esta nº 3 de Beethoven nos encontramos seguramente ante uno de los puntos má altos de esta edición. A la tensión y expresividad típica se le suman en este caso una trascendencia, una profundidad y unos silencios visionarios que encumbran esta 3ª no sólo como una de las mejores terceras de siempre sino hacia la cúspide del arte de Furtwangler.CD 10.-Sinfonías nº 8 & 9 de Schubert (15-09-1953).La 8ª es tan excepcional como la reseñada en el CD nº 3, de 1948; en este caso con mejor sonido. La 9ª es similar, en mi opinión, a la famosa de 1951 (DG The Originals). Alejadas ambas de la tensión extrema de la de 1942-44. La que nos ocupa es ligeramente más rápida de tempi que la de DG, oscilando entre 20-30 segundos menos por movimiento, excepto el Scherzo que es alrededor de un minuto más rápido en esta de Audite. El sonido de ambas es similar (hay que recordar también que la 9º de DG, 1951, siempre ha sido una de las interpretaciones de Furtwangler que se conservaban con mejor sonido en unión de la famosa 4ª de Schuman, de 1953 -DG, The Originals-). En mi opinión la calidad artística de ambas novenas es similar, aunque creo que finalmente me decidiría por la de DG.CD 11.-Sinfonía nº 3 de Brahms; Don Juan, de R. Strauss, y Preludio e Isolda Liebestod, de Wagner (27-04-1954).La nº 3 de Brahms sigue el mismo concepto de las del 8 y 18 de diciembre de 1949 (Emi y Audite, persistiendo la duda de si estas son la misma o no), pero a cambio nos encontramos con un buen sonido que mejora claramente a las anteriores.CD 12.-Sinfonías nº6ª y 5ª de Beethoven (23-05-1954).Finalizan aquí estas grabaciones de la RIAS recogidas por Audite en el presente cofre. Son estas unas versiones también magníficas, habiendo que pensárselo mucho antes de decidir a cuales son inferiores. Siguen el denominador común del último Furtwangler, más solemne y trascendente que tenso y agitado. Quiero reparar especialmente en esta 5ª (reeditada en varias ediciones de Tahra, entre ellas la FURT 1008). Es esta la última 5ª (la número 13 y última, siguiendo el orden cronológico, conforme a información de la Sociedad WF) de las que se conservan y se conocen del Maestro, y puedo asegurar que es de las más grandes. Es una 5ª grandiosa, de sonoridades amplias, reposada y que, aunque distinta, no es inferior a ninguna de las anteriores.CD 13 (Bonus).-Furtwangler habla sobre el arte de la interpretación.CONCLUSIÓN: Este cofre, como decíamos, es muy recomendable. Sobre las mismas obras se mejora la calidad de sonido anterior, pero que tampoco nadie espere aquí milagros.

Los aficionados a la música siempre hemos sentido el no poder disfrutar plenamente de las interpretaciones existentes del maestro Furtwangler en sonido de calidad. Exceptuando algunas de sus grabaciones para EMI o más recientemente sellos como Tahra u Orfeo, el resto de sus grabaciones, casi todas provenientes de conciertos, tenían un sonido muy flojo, no haciendo justicia a las súblimes interpretaciones de este. Pues bien, esta recopilación del sello AUDITE biene a paliar en parte esa deuda pendiente, ya que el sonido (para la época) mejora en mucho a las grabaciones piratas. No voy a opinar sobre nivel interpretativo, detalles técnicos y de grabación, pues mi nivel musical no llega a tanto. Lo que si puedo hacer es recomendar esta publicación a todos los que amen esta sentida y magestuosa forma de interpretar que tenía el maestro.

フルトヴェングラーは伝説の指揮者だが、CDの録音に難があった。古いので仕方がないと思い聴いていた。これは随分と良い。愛聴番になりそうだ。やはりベートーヴェンやワーグナーが良いと感じた。

Es un tipo de dirección que ya no se lleva: enérgica, exprimiendo cada nota al maximo, tenerlo es imprescindible para un buen aficionado. El sonido es el de su época, que le vamos a hacer

Die Rias-recordings gibt es auch wesentlich günstiger auf CD. Trotzdem ist für audiophile Plattenspielerbesitzer die Vinyl-Version beinahe ein Muss. Es ist unglaublich, welch dynamische Urgewalt man schon in den 50ern aufnehmen und heute auf Vinylbannen konnte und kann. Moderne Pressung auf hochwertigen 180g Platten. Über Furtwängler zu schreiben ist müßig - er polarisiert auch heute noch. Aber man muss die Fünfte (1954) von dieser - im Übrigen höchst wertig gestalteten Kassette - einmal gehört haben, um zu verstehen warum dieser Dirigent sowohl in den dunklen Jahren unserer Geschichte als auch später solche Faszination ausübte.

Un buen estuche para disfrutar en vacaciones. En la era digital conmueve por estas grabaciones. La técnica no puede sustituir al talento.
