Michael Cimino's masterpiece, The Deer Hunter has been stunningly restored to mark its 40th anniversary.Winner of five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Christopher Walken, The Deer Hunter is widely acknowledged as one of cinema's great masterpieces and contains some of the most memorable scenes in film history. When Michael (Robert De Niro), Steven (John Savage) and Nick (Christopher Walken) are captured by the Vietcong, they are forced to play Russian Roulette by their brutal captors, who make bets on their survival. The experience of capture leaves them with terrible physical and psychological wounds and when Michael returns to Saigon to fulfil an old promise to one of his friends, he makes an unexpected, horrific discovery. Also features astonishing performances from Meryl Streep as the woman both Michael and Nick fall in love with and John Cazale (The Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon) as their unhinged and insecure friend Stan. Review: Simply one of the best movies ever - I bought the 4K restoration and it is very good, the quality of the black shading is good as there's very little spill of colour. As for the film itself, folk in their 50's or above will note that the main theme music Stanley Myers - Cavatina is what you'd know as "the gallery theme" from the artist Tony Hart. The story is good, well paced with some standout set pieces and served as the last film that John Cazale (Fredo Corleone in the Godfather films) acted in. There is some artistic licence taken as with all movies but there's enough reality to ensure you are invested in the lives of these folk from the rust belt (Pennsylvania i believe but filmed in Cleveland Ohio) who are thrust into the Vietnam war. Robert De Niro and the fabulous Christopher Walken (the latter deservedly winning an Oscar) are excellent and portray their characters with poise and emotional depth. Review: Great film - Great film. Highly recommended. Great value for money. Thanks. 5*

A fantastic restoration of a classic piece of cinema
Obviously this is a classic, a truly great film about the dehumanizing effect of war, featuring an all-time haunting performance from Walken and a brilliantly reserved turn from the youngish DeNiro. I bought the Blu Ray of the recent 40th anniversary restoration, and while I agree with some others that the drab colour pallette, depth and grain are still present, this is without a doubt the best Ive evwr seen the film look. Not only is the picture and sound vastly superior to any previous dvd release (and for those of us oldies that might also have it, the VHS!) but the look is quintessential 70s cinema, naturalistic and dirty, which adds to its enduring power. My 5.1 system coped well with the new mix, and the beautiful Cavatina has never sounded so crisp! I bought this for full price on first release and it was well worth that, so is a steal at just a tenner. This? This is THIS.

good service and price
Its now fashionable amongst the liberal elite to smear The Deerhunter as facist. I think its still the best "vietnam war" film bespite the actual war content being minimal. it has outlasted its rival "coming home" and cannot be written out of history.

4K Studiocanal 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition
The extras and the collectables are great. Package is great and I am beginning to like the cover also. Movie is of course one of the greatest. However the transfer is a bit of hit and miss. I believe it probably could not get a better treatment but I also believe that 4K might not be the best way to experience it. The increase in detail is solid and HDR adds a lot of impact but the black crushes from time to time and the picture can be very dim if you don't have a decent TV-set and even with one. I think the remastered Bluray is absolutely good enough and the 4K was not needed to add to the cost but I am still very happy with the set and it still looks the best it has ever looked. Just a little warning if you are looking for something to test your new 4K set with, this might not be the best option. All in all as a set it is 4/5.

There are movies that define life and this is one of them. I watch this movie regularly, probably 3 or 4 times a year and the 40th anniversary edition was something I was looking forward to, went to see it at the cinema as it happens and that was something else. There's nothing quite like being alone in the cinema... This BR edition is fine in my opinion in terms of picture and sound quality, the 4k will wait until my technology catches up. I love how the move plays our in different parts, the home living in the close steel working community, the hunting, the war, the coming home and the returning to bring Nick home. It honestly one of those movies that you become part of, like I say it defines you and is of course timeless...
