Should the newly planted ones be covered with (shredded leaves) something in the winter in New England to be protected from the cold?

I planted mine in January in Maryland and mulched around them. It won’t hurt to lightly cover them with leaves. Make sure they do not dry out when first planted so the roots can take hold.

definitely full! not too root-bound. I left a couple in their pots from last summer until this spring, and they’re as happy as ever.

Water bog ??? not very deep water will it survive

Not sure what your question is. Are you concerned that your spot is too wet or too dry? All I can tell you is Mondo Grass is extremely easy to grow and care for. Just dig a small hole and tap the dirt back around the root ball. As long as it's not in standing water or allowed to dry out completely as in a drought, it should do fine.
