This New York Times bestselling biography tells the life story of the most iconic men's tennis player of the modern era. There have been other biographies of Roger Federer, but never one with this kind of access to the man himself, his support team, and the most prominent figures in the game, including such rivals as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Roddick. In The Master , New York Times correspondent Christopher Clarey sits down with Federer and those closest to him to tell the story of the greatest player in men's tennis. Roger Federer has often made it look astonishingly easy through the decades: carving backhands, gliding to forehands, leaping for overheads and, in his most gravity-defying act, remaining high on a pedestal in a world of sports rightfully flooded with cynicism. But his path from temperamental, bleach-blond teenager with dubious style sense to one of the greatest, most self-possessed and elegant of competitors has been a long-running act of will, not destiny. He not only had a great gift. He had grit. Christopher Clarey, one of the top international sportswriters working today, has covered Federer since the beginning of his professional career. He was in Paris on the Suzanne Lenglen Court for Federer's first Grand Slam match and has interviewed him exclusively more than any other journalist since his rise to prominence. Here, Clarey focuses on the pivotal people, places, and moments in Federer's long and rich career: reporting from South Africa, South America, the Middle East, four Grand Slam tournaments, and Federer's native Switzerland. It has been a journey like no other player's, rife with victories and a few crushing defeats, one that has redefined enduring excellence and made Federer a sentimental favorite worldwide. The Master tells the story of Federer's life and career on both an intimate and grand scale, in a way no one else could possibly do. Review: King Roger - This bio of one of tennis’ greatest players and gentlemen on and off the court is a great read.. So much detailed information about this spectacular man. Review: What can I say? It’s about THE G.O.A.T!!! - Fascinating & more in depth than what (I) or one would[‘ve] expected. It reveals different viewpoints as to how & what Roger experienced & intuitively endured. I LOVE it!! (And I it doesn’t hurt that the jacket cover is in my FAVOURITE colour!!) DEF worth the price, & it looks good on my shelf when it’s not being read. Very well written & touching at some parts, if you even don’t *like* (sports) specifically tennis at all, this is truly an insightful book that everyone should have. Great stuff! Kudos to Mr. Clarey he deserves an A+++!!! A near MASTERPIECE! Thanks for a great read! ALOHA! 🤙🏼 Michael…..🤓 🎾

fun read.. inspiring insight into the mind and making of the legend
Enjoyed the book, for the general reader trying to get into the mind and spirit of the player, the details of every play point by point could be too much detail or just the detail that would keep them at the edge of the seat.

How death propelled Federer to greatness
Christopher Clarey has been the lucky one to be able to gather material for his Federer book for over 20 years. Undeniably this has its advantages. The book contains everything worth to know about this tennis phenomenon. I have also followed Federer as long as Clarey but from the tv screen, mostly, but also seen him play live 4-5 times. For me there was nothing really new in the book, but Clarey brings the role of Peter Carter, boyhood coach of Federer, in more details than ever before? Or more fittingly the role of accidental death of Carter who had seen and believed that this boy will become the best player in the world. Years Federer did not meet the expectations put on him. Only after Carter's death Federer realised that he owes Carter that he must become a man capable to fulfil his potential. And he did that. Credit for Clarey also for describing the backgrounds of Nadal and Djokovic. Somehow he also succeeds in being a kind of fan of Federer and still being critical at times or at least letting some critical voices have some space in the book. Text is fluent but not that fluent that you write more that 400 pages without subtitles. Book contains sixteen chapters and Epilogue but you never know what is the subject in the next chapter. Clarey surfs between some 25 years time span without chronology which is ok but I would like to know where we are heading next. To me there are also too many people testifying too little details from Federer's youth. In trying to turn every stone Clarey has turned a few too many. Clarey describes Federer's exceptional personality from numerous angles. The man is a rarity in many ways and everyone dealt with him credit his capabilities in meeting people like he would have all the time with you though there is a line of thousand waiting for him. Irony of Federer's career is that his fame has not been damaged by the fact that he has lost two of his biggest matches: Wimbledon 2008 and 2019.

Master piece !!
Excellent livre du journaliste américain Ch.Clarey. Il retrace avec détails la carrière de ce sportif extraordinaire. On comprend mieux pourquoi Roger Federer est aussi populaire et bien au delà du monde du tennis.

A great read, superbly resarched
This is the biography of a great champion. The sections on his rivalries with Nadal and Djokovic are particularly interesting. My only disappointment is that the description on Amazon says that the book is newly revised but it doesn't cover his decision to retire nor his final appearance on court.
