Easy to Use Manual Sharpener for Carpenter's Pencils
I recently got a package of carpenter's pencils to try but didn't realize they wouldn't come sharpened, so I had to get a sharpener. I found this one and decided to try it. I was having trouble picturing how a sharpener would work since carpenter's pencils are not round but oblong. This sharpener is a very nice blue color and is made of a heavy-duty plastic. The two sides of the sharpener have raised textured areas to make it easy to grip. It's about 2.25" tall and the diameter at the bottom is about an inch. This is a manual sharpener (like the old-fashioned ones you would use in school). There is an opening on the bottom that is made for the shape of the carpenter's pencil. What's unique about this sharpener (compared to ones made for regular pencils) is that the inside rotates, allowing all sides of the pencil to reach the blade and get sharpened. Just as a note, it appears you might also be able to sharpen round pencils with this sharpener if they are on the larger side (the kind a child might use). The opening is too large for a standard pencil, but a fatter pencil would fit nicely in the cross opening (see picture). It only took me a minute or two to sharpen my pencil to a point so I could use it. The sharpener did a great job. I have never had to sharpen a carpenter's pencil before, but now I can with this tool. I highly recommend it.

A good carpentry tool
Works as it should. Makes a sturdy useable point. Much better than my old one that left to much lead exposed resulting in easy breakage. It even does a fair job of sharpening a standard pencil.

This and a pocket knife will sharpen square pencils. Works better with My First Pencil!!!
It is painful sharpening square pencils. You whittle and the graphite breaks. I then found this sharpener. This makes sharpening carpenter's pencils much easier. You put the pencil into the end, it has an opening that is the shape of the pencil. The inside portion of the tool spins against the blade while you hold the outside. It carves off the sides and then you can get your pocket knife to finish the job. (you still have to use a pocket knife and try not to break the graphite but most of the work is done) I did find that this pencil sharpener also sharpens what I believe to be the ultimate carpenter's pencil. (It's not what you think) I just discovered it the other day. It is called "My First Ticonderoga" pencil. It is meant for young kids who cannot yet grip a thin pencil. Ignore that though, they have created the best carpenter's pencil ever. (or get one for you and one for your kid) The pencil comes with a sharpener (that can also sharpen crayons incidentally) and it is round so it is easier to sharpen and you don't have to use a pocket knife at all. You can use this higher quality Irwin sharpener on the My First pencil! The downside is that you lose the ability to sharpen crayons. (tradeoffs) The lead in the middle is very thick making it perfect for carpentry work. In fact, the lead (which is, of course, is actually graphite) is of higher quality than any of my carpenter's pencils. It shines when I make a line. I can see it with polarized sunglasses on better. Even on old wood that I am reusing, I can easily see the lines that I make. It has an eraser that will most likely never be used but just I consider the eraser a safety device. (not really, that is just a joke) If you work in the trade, you will probably get some ribbing for using a child's pencil. I know I have been getting a bit of grief from the people I have been doing carpentry work with, my wife and kid. It is totally worth it. (earplugs help with that too) If you are really concerned about it, you could scrape off the name and branding and paint it something manly like camouflage. That is a bit of effort but it is probably still easier than sharpening a traditional carpenter's pencil. I was so happy I discovered that pencil and I was also happy to find that this Irwin sharpener worked with it! The only downside is that the round pencils roll. Square pencils stay put. That is the only downside I can think of and it might be a big deal for some who are used to square pencils. I did shapen my square pencils with this though and it does work for that. Sharpen then use the pocket knife to finish the job if you don't break the graphite. I will mostly be using this for sharpening My First Pencils though.

Guter Anspitzer.
Was erwartet man von einem Anspitzer? Genau. In der Praxs sieht das jedoch oft anders aus, doch dieser macht einen sehr guten Job.
