Does this iron have a spring clamp? If not, what holds the hair in as you curl?

Yes it does have spring clamp. However, it does not pull out the hair when you actually use it. It rolls down smoothly without stucking the hair in it. I have used T3 and it does pull out hair on the spring, but this GHD one does not do that. I love mine.

For the 1.25" curling iron (not wand) what is the length of the barrel excluding the cool tip?

Barrel length excluding cooling tip is: 4-3/4"
