With a whole host of noisy zoo-animal characters to meet and even a cameo from the Queen, What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday is a fantastic rhyming adventure from stellar picture book partnership of Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks. Those two bad men, Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh, are back! They may be in the city instead of the farm, but they haven't changed their thieving ways. In fact, they're even more ambitious. They're planning to steal a monkey from the zoo and use him to pinch the Queen's crown. Unfortunately for them, they don't know that a certain crime-busting ladybird is holidaying in the very same city . . . and she's got a good idea that will ensure the dastardly pair won't get away with it! Now available as a board book, this much-loved classic is perfect for young readers, with brilliant rhyming verse from Julia Donaldson, author of The Gruffalo , and bright, distinctive illustrations from award-winning illustrator, Lydia Monks. Enjoy more adventures with the clever little ladybird in What the Ladybird Heard, What the Ladybird Heard Next and What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside . This story is one that is told in rhyme Thatโs a winner for me, every time! It concerns the ladybird who Flies to London and visits the zoo. She hears two thieves who are plotters Planning to steal Monkey Joe - the rotters! To discover what happens youโll need This delightful story yourself to read. With zoo animals and the Queenโs corgis, too, The story is action packed through and through. The illustrations are superb, colourful and bright And overall I believe this story really is just right! A lovely, pacey, poetic read
My three year old grandson is already an avid fan of Julia Donaldsonโs books and will no doubt love this one too. Written in the authorโs trademark rhyming couplets style, enhanced by delightful illustrations from Lydia Monks, we encounter the ladybird on holiday in London. While she is there, she hears Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh cooking up a dastardly plan to capture a monkey from the zoo as a means of stealing from the Queen. Their scheme is foiled by the ladybirdโs careful listening and hatching her own crafty plan with the animals at the zoo. As the action unfolds, we see how they collaborate to rescue their monkey friend. Along the way, subtle teaching helps inform a listening child about animal activities, sounds and species, and general moral principles relating to behaviour, friendship and helping others in need. A lovely, pacey book for preschoolers.

Join the ladybird for another adventure
Julia Donaldson gave herself a really hard act to follow with The Gruffalo - on Amazon UK this has over 1,000 reviews and an average of 4.9!! Both my grandchildren love it and their parents already know it off by heart. So it was with high expectations that I requested a copy of What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday from NetGalley. I gave this a run-through and found the rhymes a bit awkward, so I borrowed it's predecessor, What the Ladybird Heard, from my grandson, to compare them. To my delight, I discovered that in the paper copy of the book, the ladybird has texture - so instead of saying 'where's the ladybird' on each page of my review copy, my son was directing, 'touch the ladybird', which is already so much more fun. But I also found that the rhyming in the original copy takes a few reads to get the hang of, to get the rhythm right. What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday is intended for a slightly older audience (3 - 6 years) than The Gruffalo (2 - 5 years), so my grandchildren are still a little young for it, but they loved the animals and will get more involved with the book as they understand the story better. I may be giving this one 4 stars, based on the slightly awkward rhyming, but it's still an excellent choice for all young children.

Did not disappoint
My toddler looooves the first two books in the series and this one became an instant favourite too. The pages with the animal sounds are his most favourite part.

Fun and Entertaining Holiday Adventure
"What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday" by Julia Donaldson is a delightful addition to the Ladybird's adventures. In this story, the Ladybird goes on a vacation and encounters a new set of animal friends at the seaside. Together, they uncover a dastardly plot by two thieves to steal the mermaid's treasures. Julia Donaldson's captivating storytelling and rhythmic rhymes make this book a joy to read aloud. The illustrations are colorful and engaging, perfectly complementing the playful narrative. My children loved following along with the Ladybird's holiday escapades and joining in the fun as the animals work together to outsmart the thieves. It's a heartwarming tale of friendship, teamwork, and cleverness that captures the imagination. I highly recommend "What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday" to parents and caregivers looking for a charming and entertaining storybook that sparks creativity and imagination in young readers.

Fantastic book
Very good book, it's brilliant addition to the original 'What the ladybird heard' series. The book is as interesting as the previous one, and being a little bit familiar but with new surprising plots makes it exciting reading.
