Will this work for a canon M50 camera

It works with the listed lenses regardless of camera. That being said, I use on the EF-M 15-45mm kit lens on my M50.

Hi, can this be mounted directly onto a 52mm filter?

Yes, it could be mounted onto a 52mm filter. But vignetting may show with the hood on if mounted in that manner. The hood is made to go on first however it likely will not vignette only if shoot wide open at f1.8 or f2.

Can you add step up rings with this hood installed?

Maybe. Depending on how large a step-up you are talking about, you may be able to screw one in with the hood in its normal position. You will not be able to flip hood around though without removing the ring/filter. You might consider one of the screw-on hoods for the filter you are using as long as it's threaded on the front side. Some are not.
