A powerful new translation of Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesseโs masterpiece of youthful rebellionโwith a foreword and cover art by James Franco A Penguin Classic A young man awakens to selfhood and to a world of possibilities beyond the conventions of his upbringing in Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesseโs beloved novel Demian. Emil Sinclair is a quiet boy drawn into a forbidden yet seductive realm of petty crime and defiance. His guide is his precocious, mysterious classmate Max Demian, who provokes in Emil a search for self-discovery and spiritual fulfillment. A brilliant psychological portrait, Demian is given new life in this translation, which together with James Francoโs personal and inspiring foreword will bring a new generation to Hesseโs widely influential coming-of-age novel. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Great Read
Very well written and enjoyable book. It is not for small children despite the short length as it is rather complex and has varying levels of meaning.

A mix of eastern and western philosophy and mysticism.
A surreal journey through Emilโs childhood and young adulthood after he meets the enigmatic, mysterious and dare I say amoral Demian. (I read it in high school and hated it. 5 decades later I found it well written and engaging.)

Simply awesome
I have read books throughout my years as a teenager, but when I read this book, this book just brought a lot to the table. Such bold and dynamic characters in the story. Makes it more incredible to see how the main character develops throughout the story. The plot is fresh and it never felt prolonged or just filler. Each read adds something new to the story. Highly recommend the read!

Along with Siddhartha, Demian is another Hesse classic
Great story of coming of age and feeling a sense of oneness to the connected natural and spiritual world. There were many great characters and interesting philosophical observations along the way. The introduction by James Franco seemed a bit disconnected to the book itself and self-serving, but the other introduction (by which scholar I have forgotten) was wonderfully researched and well written.

A must read!
A psichological analisis of a boy coming to age. The Junguian theory of the shadow haunts the main character. Wonderful book, Hesse is one of my preferred writers.

A must read. Beautiful book
If you have been a seeker all your life . If you always questioned the way of the world as a child and as an adult. This book will resonate with you. If you are new to Hesse. Demian and Siddhartha are the best books to dive in. Hope you meet the Demian in you! โฅ๏ธ

Awesome!!!
Exactly what I wanted. Ordered two books. The books came in clean with no notable damages to the cover or the pages inside. Ordered this one in particular because I like the picture used on the cover. Very pleased!

Demian, a great, thought-provoking read
I really enjoyed this novel, the first I've read from Hesse. It was recommended to me after reading 'The Catcher In The Rye', which I also enjoyed as a story but was somewhat surprised at its infamy having now read it, feeling to me more like the journal and feelings of days in the life of a late teen, rather than the deep, insightful tome it is somewhat touted to be. Demian, at a surface level, shares the similarity of the angst of youth and day to day minutae but deals with larger philosophical, ethical and religious themes worthy of the infamy of 'The Catcher' but, unfortunately, is the lesser known novel. Without adding spoilers, the imagery of the First World War near the end, part of the tension the whole story is working towards was incredible and harrowing. Thoughts and symbols on oneness, existence, art, war, birth, death, love, hate and life all within uncertainty are expounded throughout, making it a great story to think on and come back to.
