Exceptionally High-Quality Fish Food – My Tetras, Lampeyes, and Catfish Absolutely Thrive on It
As a dedicated hobbyist with a peaceful community tank that includes neon tetras, glowlight tetras, lampeyes, and catfish, I’m always on the lookout for a high-quality, nutritionally balanced food that meets the needs of all my species. After trying many brands over the years, Fluval Bug Bites has clearly emerged as the best all-round option — it’s now a permanent part of my fishkeeping routine. What sets Bug Bites apart is its insect-based formulation, led by black soldier fly larvae as the primary ingredient. This isn’t a trendy gimmick — it’s a thoughtful, biologically appropriate choice that closely reflects what small freshwater fish would eat in their natural habitats. The results speak for themselves: my fish are more active, exhibit deeper colours, and feed with genuine enthusiasm every time. The neon and glowlight tetras dart out excitedly as soon as the granules hit the water. There’s no hesitation, no bits left floating — just eager feeding from every corner of the tank. The lampeyes, with their more delicate, deliberate feeding style, seem to handle the granules easily, and I’ve had no issues with digestion or water fouling. As for my bottom-dwelling catfish, they happily clear up any that sink, making this a well-rounded food for both midwater and substrate feeders. One of the key benefits of Bug Bites is the clean feeding experience. The granules hold their shape well and don’t break down into cloudy mush, which helps keep the water clearer and the filter system cleaner. That’s a big plus in a mixed-species setup where excess food can quickly affect water quality. Nutritionally, it’s outstanding. Alongside the insect protein, the inclusion of salmon adds valuable omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, supporting overall health, immune strength, and vibrant colouring. The added vitamins and minerals seem to genuinely benefit my fish — I’ve noticed fewer signs of stress, brighter eyes, better fin condition, and steady growth, all without overfeeding. Another factor worth praising is Fluval’s commitment to sustainability. Insect protein is not only ideal for fish, but also an environmentally responsible alternative to traditional fish meal. For those of us who care about the ecological impact of our hobby, that’s a significant advantage. To sum up: Fluval Bug Bites is an excellent, intelligently designed food that provides balanced, natural nutrition for a wide range of tropical freshwater species. It supports everything from vibrant colours to digestive health, keeps the tank clean, and is made by a brand I’ve come to trust. If you keep a peaceful community tank with small to mid-sized fish like mine, I can’t recommend Bug Bites highly enough. Your fish will thrive — and they’ll show it every feeding time.

Great quality food that my fish actually eat
I’ve tried a lot of different tropical fish foods, but Bug Bites has easily been the best so far. The granules are the perfect size and sink slowly, which makes feeding time smooth—especially for my tetras, who go crazy for this stuff. They eat it eagerly, and it doesn’t scatter all over the tank like some other foods do. The ingredients are solid, mainly insect larvae and salmon, so it feels like I’m giving my fish something close to their natural diet. Since switching to this food, I’ve noticed brighter colors, more active behavior, and less wasted food sitting on the substrate. If you want a reliable daily food that tetras and other small tropical fish genuinely enjoy, this is an excellent pick.

Need to Grind to be Palatable For Small Fish
Says suitable for small fish. We have cloud minnows and guppies. They cannot eat this food as it comes. The particles, although small, are too big. The first time I offered this food the fish really seemed to like it but we're unable to get the pieces in their mouths. I used a mortar and pestle to grind the food into smaller pieces. This worked a treat. It's definitely a food the fish like but it's a faff preparing it. I find Supa, High Protein Fish Food granules better suited for the minnows and guppies (and it's much cheaper). I can't comment on quality because our fish have a varied diet of flakes, granules and freeze dried bugs and they seem very healthy. For a special treat and by far their favourite is a cooked mashed pea (skin removed!)

Bought for a tropical tank, my fish LOVE them. I found them quite fast sinking but they're eaten within seconds and my fish look fantastic.

This thing came unsealed, plus it says on it (slow sinking) and it should have said (immediate sinking!!) Very disappointed i dont know if the sinking thing is because it wasn’t sealed or because of something in the product.

I use Fluval Bug Bites small granules across multiple nano tanks and it’s been a great all around food. I feed it to bettas, pea puffers, corydoras, and kuhli loaches, and even my shrimp and snails will graze on it. Everyone loves it! The ingredients are solid. Black soldier fly larvae as the main ingredient is a big plus, along with fish protein and added vitamins. It feels much cleaner than a lot of filler heavy foods, and my fish take to it immediately. A little goes a long way, especially for nano tanks, so the container lasts a very long time. Overall, it’s a reliable staple food that works well for mixed community tanks with small to medium fish.
