Following on from the hugely successful Element Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells, comes the next bumper encyclopedia celebrating all facets of witchcraft. Packed full of amazing facts, bizarre information and fascinating stories, you will also be introduced to mythic witches, modern witches, sacred goddess witches, even demon witches, male and female witches, and witches from all over the globe. Ideal for both the dedicated follower and casual reader, as a perfect gift for yourself or someone else to treasure, this definitive encyclopedia is essential reading for anyone interested in folklore, mythology and magic. Review: A welcome addition on the bookshelf. - General: Love this book! Even though it’s titled an encyclopaedia, and loosely laid out like one, the entries themselves are written more in a brief chapter way. Personally I loved this, as I do struggle with Encyclopaedias that follow a dictionary-layout style. A lot of hard work as gone into this and it shows. It covers so much and I would highly recommended it, whether your a beginner looking to augment their path, or a writer that’s trying to expand on their world building. In fact, I would highly recommend this for fantasy writers that want to incorporate magic-systems into their world/story. While I’m not an expert (FAR from it) it does seem also, the things covered here are mostly from European traditions, elements of different cultures are mentioned and given their due respect, but the bulk of it does feel European. As mentioned it covers so much but the author takes her time to clearly explain things. It’s written in a clear and easy manner to read and comprehend. I bought this as hardback and kindle, both were delivered very quickly and in fantastic condition. Pros: 1) well researched and evident a lot of work has been put into it. 2) easy to read 3) laid out clearly, easy to dip in and out - but doesn’t feel as impersonal as dictionary/Encyclopaedias can sometimes be. 4) wonderful nuggets of information. Cons: 1) a lot of entries are designed to be quick intros - nothing in depth. Will need to do further research/reading if that’s what your after. 2) while it does cover ALOT, naturally there will be things missing. Especially, from paths that lie outside of European traditions. 3) not a strict encyclopaedia in the strictest sense. If your looking for something with a more dictionary-layout then there are other great books. Review: Excellent - a fantastic overview of witchcraft, in all of its aspects - This encyclopedia is a companion to the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF 5000 SPELLS, also by the same author. When I first received this volume, I was surprised in some ways: I had been expecting it to be organised by A-Z reference. In a sense it is, but Judika has actually arranged subject areas into alphabetical order, rather than absolutely everything there is to know about witchcraft in general - a much better way of going about it. The encyclopedia begins with an informative introduction. I urge everyone who picks up this encyclopedia, especially those with perhaps limited knowledge about Wicca and witchcraft, to read this first. Judika highlights in here that, as with beauty, "what constitutes witchcraft is dependent upon the eye of its beholder" (p.1). Quite an obvious onbsevation, but one that definitely warrants discussion, even in today's world. Following the introduction, there is then a section about the elements of aitchcraft. Again, I would urge you to read this before delving into the late pages. Topics covered here are the roots of witchcraft, animism, the worship of goddesses and the image of the sacred female plus dualism. Some of the subjects included in the reference section of the encyclopedia include Animals, Books of Magic and Witchcraft, Calendar of Revelry and Sacred Days, Fairies, Creative Arts, Women's Mysteries and Wormwood and Garlic: Dangers and Protection. As another reviewer said, this book is really a work to be used as a point of reference. It is not a how-to of witchcraft - patly because in order to do that, it would have to take on a certain stance, or tradition, and I see this book as more a general reference to witchcraft. This volume would be a good starting point for someone who has no or a little knowledge and would like to develop that knowledge. By Judika providing an extensive bibliography, you would certainly be able to use it in such a way. Likewise, because the index is also included, it enables you to use this book as a very accessible first point of call for when you may want information quickly. This is a brilliant encyclopedia. It serves its purpose very well. I am incredibly pleased that I purchased it. Good, informative books are not always easy to come by - books on Wicca and witchcraft can either be fabulous or very prescripted - whereas this helps you to learn more about such a wide subject with the chance to go away and develop your knowledge by further research. Highly recommended.

second hand, really?
This was supposed to be in "good condition". Well it arrived within a few days, well packaged and you REALLY would be hard to say it was second hand. The dust cover was a TINY bit turned up at edges, but I've seen that much on new books in bookstores, otherwise the book is in EXCELLENT condition, you really wouldn't know it wasn't new. So I bought this to use as an encyclopedia, well it is one after all, planning to have on the shelf and dip in when a subject needed further research. I can never resist dipping into a book when I get a new one and I opened it at random and found myself reading for 1/2 and hour, and then flicking through as other related subjects caught my eye. So I have changed my mind, I will keep it on the shelf for research because it looks perfect for that. But before that I shall ready it from cover to cover, for pure pleasure........and also I will then have a better knowledge of what is there to research later. An excellent book, I would highly recommend both for content, writing style and shear joy to read.

Spellbound and Confused: A Hilariously Bewitching Encounter
Oh, where do I even begin with this mystical masterpiece?! Let me preface this review by saying that if you're in search of a laugh-out-loud educational experience, then The Element Encyclopedia of Witchcraft is the cauldron for you! Upon opening the book, a cloud of glitter exploded from its pages, announcing my entry into the magical world. I swear, I felt like a Hogwarts first-year student embarking on an adventure! However, as I eagerly flipped through the "A–Z" sections, my excitement quickly turned into perplexity. The book begins with a captivating introduction, reminiscent of Gandalf's epic speeches. It made me feel like I was both The Chosen One and the comic relief character in a fantasy film. But when I delved deeper into the chapters, it was as if I'd found myself stuck in a potion mixing mishap, unable to decipher spells from superstitions. Bewitching terms like "familiars," "necromancy," and "ectoplasm" left me feeling like a muggle trying to perform Transfiguration. As I chanted "wingardium leviosa" at my cat, I wished for a more basic translation of these enchanting words. Alas, the book stayed true to its mission of being an encyclopedia, leaving no stone unturned (or un-enchanted). What really tickled my funny bone were the numerous historical anecdotes spiced up with a sprinkle of magical madness. Who knew that witches once used toadstools as fashionable adornments or that broomsticks were initially designed for optimal aerodynamics during witch races? I must admit, these intriguing tidbits made me question my choice of today's conventional fashion and transportation. Maybe I should invest in a stylish pointy hat and a broomstick-scooter hybrid! And let's not forget the cherished photos throughout the book. They were like a "Where's Waldo?" of wizards and wonder, hiding amidst the pages. I had a blast popping on my purple velvet wizard robe, grabbing my magnifying glass (or should I say, my crystal ball), and searching diligently for elusive magical creatures hiding in grainy yet enchanting monochrome. Overall, The Element Encyclopedia of Witchcraft is a spellbinding experience that had me spellbound… and confused. While it left me scratching my head more times than a potion-gone-wrong, I couldn't help but appreciate the author's dedication to covering every single aspect of the magical world. It's a must-have for anyone looking to expand their knowledge, or perhaps just their smile, in the realm of witchcraft. P.S. Excuse me, there's a broomstick at the door, brb!

Fascinating
I love this book. As someone who's always been drawn to witches and paganism but never really looked into it in depth this book is a fascinating study. Elements of history and mythology are woven in along with various aspects of witchcraft from around the world. As someone trying to write a book with witchy elements in it this will be a very valuable resource. One thing to note: If you intend to use it regularly for reference you may wish to get a physical copy, as it's a little more difficult to just flick through a kindle edition, especially one so long as this. However the price of the kindle version is unbeatable and I would highly recommend it.

Full of knowledge about spirits
I love Judika. Her books are very informative, large, with so many pages. I can't imagine how much work she invests in them. But this is my favourite author. Meeting Judika in person was a revelation for me. We had several meetings online. She is gorgeous and beautiful the way she is. There is so much depth in her. I have all her books, and it is great to see her books in stores around Australia. Those books are not for everyone, of course, but they are full of knowledge about spirits and that dimension in which they exist. Thank you, Judika.
