It has been struggle since my youth. I appreciate the recipes. This is a great asset for those who are diary intolerant or allergic to diary. Review: A life-saving book - THANK YOU to the author and all the people who contributed to make this incredible, life-saving book. This book holds your hand through living an entirely dairy-free lifestyle, from strategies for eating out to navigating nutrition-information labels that may not immediately appear to have dairy products on them. When we realized our son's dairy allergy was becoming more severe, I was an emotional wreak, because first I couldn't imagine living without cheese, second I had no idea how to balance a diet without dairy, and third I was terrified of messing up and making my child suffer due to our own ignorance of various dairy by-products. The recipes in the book are delicious and very easy. I haven't tried many that require a blender or a spice grinder because we don't have either, but the majority are still doable without them. Some have complained that this is largely a vegan cookbook. That's true, and the author explains that that is because vegans have contributed the most to her knowledge of dairy-free living and wanted to be sure that vegans were well-served with this book. I think that's fair. I have also found that this book is so informative, that I feel empowered to replace ANY dairy product that I encounter in my other cookbooks with substitutes in this book including cottage cheese, sour cream and buttermilk. Previously, I'd be stuck on these particular things and only felt confident with substituting regular milk or butter(and often not being satisfied with the result due to the different flavor profiles of various non-dairy milks--this book walks you through this as well). I absolutely recommend this book. I think it is essential for anyone who wishes to live dairy-free for religious, ethical or allergen reasons.

Exceptionally thorough, very informative, absolutely helpful!
This is a valuable cookbook for me, as I have had to alter my diet completely to eliminate milk products as a result of my nursing son's milk allergies. However, I was delighted to discover that it is much more than a cookbook! The first several chapters address dairy and dairy-free from a health perspective, explaining things like the make-up of cow's milk and other commercially available mammal milks; what lactose-free, A2, and acidophilus milks and kefir are; what is pasteurization and homogenization; milk's effects on various health issues such as lactose intolerance, ADHD, autism, and weight loss; good sources of calcium; and infant and childhood milk allergies. Everything is well-researched well-explained. There are chapters on how to be dairy-free when eating away from home, on the road, back to school, and eating with friends and family, as well as how to go grocery shopping and what to stock up on, including helpful sample grocery lists and what ingredients on food labels are milk-derived. There are very specific lists of all kinds of "okay" foods, along with information on how to contact the companies that make them. There is invaluable information on good dairy substitutes (some that you can purchase pre-made from a store, others that you can make following a recipe) and lots of just good recipes and meal ideas. At the end, there are a couple chapters on other good resources for being dairy-free! I love this book! The only thing that would make it better would be pictures. There are no pictures in this book, which I think would be helpful for the recipes. However, there are libraries of information contained in this book, and all the suggested recipes and foods have been tested by personal experience by the author and everything is very good! I haven't found a recipe yet that I didn't like!

Helpful and Very Encouraging
I found Go Dairy Free to not only be extremely helpful in describing what dairy-free living is all about; but it was very encouraging as well. It's tough to change your life and eating habits when you discover that you are allergic to milk; and the author sympathsizes with you. However, she doesn't just join in a food pity-party. In an upbeat and positive way, the author explains the dos and don'ts of dairy-free living and brings the concept to reality. I love, love, love the helpful lists and advice she gives about milk substitues and how she has developed recipes for things like cream of mushroom soup and condensed milk to replace those ingredients in our favorite family recipes. There are tons of other delicious recipes too! Overall, I rated this book 5 stars because it is the only one I've found for dairy-free living that is easy to read/understand and gives me hope that it is possible to live dairy-free and enjoy life to the fullest. Dairy-free living isn't scary when you have this book as a reference guide!

Good book
I bought this book because my 2 month old daughter is possibly dairy intolerant and I would like to continue breastfeeding. This book is good for an entire life change; for someone with true milk allergies and is looking for a new way of life. It has some good recipes and advice. Though, it goes a little more in dept than what I was looking for: which is a quick guide and resource with food ideas. One thing that I really wanted that it did not have was a resturant guide. It has a general one, but I wanted a list of popular resturaunts and what i could order that is dairy free. Overall, good resource and very informative:)

great resource
This is a great resource if you are lactose intolerant and attempting to exclude dairy products from your diet. The author explains milk allergies and lactose intolerance and provides very helpful information in decoding food labels to ascertain if the products contain milk or other dairy products. She also suggests other calcium-rich foods to replace our dependence on milk to obtain the calcium in our diets, dairy-free alternatives in cooking and alternatives while dining in restaurants. I still find restaurant dining challenging but feel this book has been an invaluable resource in getting me started on a dairy-free lifestyle. The book also has recipes and numerous suggestions for dairy-free snacks and meals. I have tried and enjoyed several of the products recommended. The Cream of Broccoli soup recipe in the book is absolutely delicious and extremely easy. The author's suggestion of using vegan cookbooks was also very helpful to me as I eat meat while dining out but chiefly eat a vegetarian diet when I cook for myself. In particular, I would recommend the vegan cookbooks by Nava Atlas.

Great Guide
I have decided to go dairy free and bought this book based on the other reviews. This is really the best source of information. Any question you might have seems to be answered by Mrs. Fleming. The recipes look tasty but a little lengthy for someone like me who leaves the house at 7:30 and doesn't get home till 6:00 pm. If a listed recipe ingredient is actually another recipe, I run. I will try to incorporate some of them into my repertoire and use others on weekends. A great book and I plan to keep it in my kitchen. update: after reading through all the recipes I realize my initial assessment was a little off. Most of the recipes look very easy and do-able even for the busy 9 to 5'er. There are only a few that seem like weekend recipes as opposed to weeknight. Ingredients are easy and she gives many options for certain ingr that may not be easy to find for all. Directions are very clear and will help you know what things are supposed to look like. I especially love the one that commented "Don't panic." Very well thought out and kitchen tested.

Excellent Resource
This book has been invaluable to me since I went dairy free almost two years ago so I thought it was about time to write a review! It's worth buying for the newly dairy free just to have the information on nutrition and substitutions within easy reach. I love that soy is not used as the end-all for recipes and substitutions. Also many of the recipes are versatile because they're vegetable-, not meat-based, so you can make them vegetarian or simply add meat as suggested. The only thing that prevents this book earning five stars is that the recipes are a bit hit-or-miss. But the recipes that are good, are really good. Chocolate Chip Cookies with Oil (try them with light olive oil and almond yogurt), No Bake Granola Bars, Multi-Purpose Muffins, Veggie Lasagna, Mushroom and Sage Stuffed Bell Peppers, and Powdered "Cheese" Mix are all part of my regular rotation. And the Peanut Butter Truffles, but I try not to make those too often, they're too good ;) Unfortunately the Chocolate Cake was heavy and greasy, and the Almond Buttery Stir Fry and Lentil Curry were just not good. If you're already experienced with dairy-free cooking and are looking for innovative, chef-developed recipes this may not be your book. But if you're feeling lost and put-out that you can't eat a lot of things, this book will make you much happier.

Fantastic guide and cookbook all in one!
First section of book is guide to living dairy free with advice and alternative dairy product ideas. It is aimed at wide range of people from vegan to dairy allergy (which is me) so good selection of information for all. Second section is wide range of recipes from creating your own alternatives to dairy products to meals and cakes etc without usual dairy ingredients. I have tried soya cheese and really dislike it, so the wide range of dairy free "cheeses" appeal to me greatly. I am impressed with the range of recipes and the ingredients are not usually hard to obtain for them. In particular, there is an interesting looking "cheese" sauce recipe which I shall be trying once my secret ingredient (ok, it's just nutritional yeast) arrives in the post. There is also an index that cross references each recipe to various allergies, eg if egg or nut free, which is useful. As another review pointed out, the book is aimed at the American market. For example particular dairy free brands available in America are recommended but with google UK alternatives can easily be found. However, as there is no such book for the UK market this is certainly not a problem for me. This book is definitely my dairy free bible!

Highly reccommended.
Lot's of good recipes that don't take too long and are easy to make. The dairy replacements all work pretty well, this is a good gift for the dairy free person in your life.
