Through their sheer range, daring innovation, flawed but eloquent characters and intriguing plots, the plays of Euripides have shocked and stimulated audiences since the fifth century BC. Phoenician Women portrays the rival sons of King Oedipus and their mother's doomed attempts at reconciliation, while Orestes shows a son ravaged with guilt after the vengeful murder of his mother. In the Bacchae, a king mistreats a newcomer to his land, little knowing that he is the god Dionysus disguised as a mortal, while in Iphigenia at Aulis, the Greek leaders take the horrific decision to sacrifice a princess to gain favour from the gods in their mission to Troy. Finally, the Rhesus depicts a world of espionage between the warring Greek and Trojan camps. Review: Vital Plays - Excellent collection giving a view of Euripides and of Ancient Greek thought. Review: Compusive reading - Overall, so very modern

The Bacchae is one of the best stories I've ever read
There's a reason why Euripedes is still published thousands of years after these plays were written. The Bacchae is one of the best stories I've ever read.

The Bacchae and Other Plays (Penguin Classics)
Euripides is one of my favourite ancient Greek authors and this volume was a replacement for a lost copy of the same. Many thanks.

Greek Drama
Euripides is one of the great playwrights of classical Greece and with this collection (in translation) you have his complete works - as far as they exist. I bought it because I am writing a series of poems based on Dionysus to accompany an exhibition by Mike Healey in Corfu early next year but you should buy this if you want to touch base with the ancient origins of great drama.

Not the right plays.
This version was supposed to include: Phoenician Women, Orestes, The Bacchae, Iphigenia in Aulis, and Rhesus. However, it actually contained: Ion, The Women of Troy, Helen, and The Bacchae. Not a big deal if you want The Bacchae and don't care about the rest, but I needed the rest as well.

Amazing collection, usual Amazon damages
I cannot stand one damage to my books. So when my new book arrives with scratches and tears not enough to warrant a return but just enough to make me cry, it destroys me. The content is undoubtedly awesome! Major help for my academic work plus entertainment. Has so many great plays at one place
