Review: Five Stars - works great to keep things in my memory Review: Solid recorder - It's a pretty solid build quality, made with a metal housing its on the heavy side but I personally like that its feel like a professional recorder and it does have a line in input so not bad. The menu options are simple to navigate through, I didn't need to read the manual but you might want to. So far everything works well I'll be updating if anything's wrong.

Overwieght, poor recording quality due to bad codec, slow user interface
Very heavy, to the point where it would be annoying to carry around. It seems they've either added wieghts to the product or made the metal casing overly thick. Unit weighs 91g (3.2 oz) which is above the reported 2.57oz (72.9g), but even the reported wieght is higher than desirable. The Olympus VN-541pc recorder is 65g (with 2 AAA batteries installed). The recorder always produces `.WAV` files with `adpcm_ima_wav` encoded data. Here's the info from `ffprobe` for the various quality levels avaliable in the player: "PCM": Stream #0:0: Audio: adpcm_ima_wav ([17][0][0][0] / 0x0011), 48000 Hz, 2 channels, s16p, 384 kb/s "HQ": Stream #0:0: Audio: adpcm_ima_wav ([17][0][0][0] / 0x0011), 24000 Hz, 2 channels, s16p, 192 kb/s "SP": Stream #0:0: Audio: adpcm_ima_wav ([17][0][0][0] / 0x0011), 16000 Hz, 2 channels, s16p, 128 kb/s "LP": Stream #0:0: Audio: adpcm_ima_wav ([17][0][0][0] / 0x0011), 8000 Hz, 1 channels, s16p, 32 kb/s Note that despite including "PCM" in the name and being a "WAV" file, "adpcm_ima" is a lossy format which encodes audio data more poorly than codecs that are preceptual (working on what audio is precevable, for example: mp3, ogg, acc, opus). This means that "192 kb/s" (from "HQ") here will be worse than a 192 kb/s MP3 (and it's possible that even the "PCM - 384 kb/s" will be worse than an MP3 at 192 kb/s). The player shipped with some mp3 files on it already: 'Flowing water.MP3' 'The bird.mp3' 'Yesterday Once More.mp3' Encoding data indicates these were encoded with LAME3.98r. The device can play these back. The user interface on the device is very slow. At various points it pops up screens asking me to "Please wait", etc. Because of this latency, the switch-to-record isn't useful. The power switch appears to directly cut power, which could make it easy to corrupt recordings. The screen is hard to read when its' backlight turns off. I purchased this originally because I wanted something with a switch to record. The Olympus VN-541PC is a much better choice in that area.

Record via line in does not work. Do not buy.
I've bought this as a recorder for line-in and it does not seem to work. I have changed the recording type to "line-in" and and connected via a TRRS Cable. If you are using this via the microphone, it works fine; but for line-in, the product does not record.

Easy to use, hard to save files.
Easy to setup and use. Spent hours looking for help/guides thing to save the files to my computer with no success. Great if you donโt want a copy of your files.
