Difficult to say. The packet labelled "eggs" contains a powder that conceivably could amount to thousands of offspring. After about a week it has yielded 5-6 tiny creatures to our count. Still a worthy project for an 8-y.o.

Does this come with the food for them?

It does but they die within two weeks anyway

How do you clean the tank? With all the little ones?

Ours didn’t live long enough for us to worry about that. But I had some years ago and never cleaned the tank

Can you buy these in advance?

They come in a cryptobiotic state. They don't "hatch" until you add water. Be patient. I was ready to toss mine and I saw some movement way after the expected time.
