can i use this to measure screws? i mixed up a bunch of screws in a bag and have no idea what size is which.

Thread checkers work when you thread a screw into the checker or a nut onto it. This has the advantage of sorting the 8mm screws and nuts from the 5/16" screws and nuts. It also allows you to determine if a screw or nut is a #12 SAE as opposed to a 1/4" SAE screw or nut.
