will this work if something is glued into a slot or does it only work on surfaces?

Yes, this comes with a built in brush in the cap, that you can use to apply the Debonder into slots. Allow it to sit for about 20 - 30 minutes and it will break down the glue.

Will this product craze plastic models?

I use it in my plastic military models with pe. Works fine to debond.

is this safe for removing glue from painted surfaces?

Not sure, I would try it out on a small hidden spot...
