Can you heat food up in these.

They cannot go in a microwave. You could put them in the oven but they will get extremely hot to touch, likewise on a hob.

Does the 20 cm refer to the base of the dish ( which is always smaller)or is it 20 com from one end of the top of the dish to the other end.

The measurement is taken at the top rim. The base is around 15cm.

Can these be put in the oven? Has anyone done this?

Yes but they get hot very quickly so oven gloves are required to grasp the handles. I put them In the oven at low temperatures to keep food warm but not to roast/cook/reheat as I reckon the food would burn.
