Making and Breaking the Grid: A Graphic Design Layout Workshop (Second Edition) is the essential easy-to-use guide for designers working in every medium who want to take their work to the next level. Grids are the most basic and essential forms in graphic design—and they can be the most rigid. This book shows you how to understand the rules of the grid to use them effectively, and then how to break them, resulting in phenomenal cohesive layouts . Timothy Samara explains the history of the grid and shows examples of grid basics , such as column, compound, and modular grids. He shows methods for building and using grids, and offers numerous examples of stunning design projects using a variety of imagery and typography. Pages are filled with hundreds of large full-color layout concepts and diagrams that educate and inspire. After mastering the grid, discover how to break it using conceptual designs that deconstruct and flip the grid successfully. Split, splice, and shift; create spontaneous compositions; make narrative constructs, work on an axis; use intuitive design and more to create unique layouts or other projects. See ideas in action with eye-catching layout examples. With this book you will: learn how grids work. be inspired to explore new concepts for using—or not using—grids. discover achievable alternatives for boring layouts. get the results you want using fresh design elements. learn designers’ processes via fascinating case studies. see numerous examples of successful layouts created with and without grids. communicate ideas effectively using visual language. This new, expanded edition will help you grow your knowledge of grid design, so you can start breaking some rules. Review: A brilliant book for designers! - This is a large format, heavy, and well illustrated very comprehensive book — a must-read for all graphic designers. It's a resource I can always come back to when working on my design project. You will find inside a lot of great examples, case studies, best practices, do's and don'ts, and more! Overall, a must-have resource for design students and professionals alike. PS. I had the pleasure of interviewing Timothy on my podcast (On Branding Podcast), if you want to get a preview of what's inside the book—I invite you to check it out. Review: A MUST buy for designers.. - Honestly this book has been sitting on my shelf for about 4 months because I was working on a huge project. Finally found some down time to read it and oh my god.. yes it does have basic information but so much more. It really makes me understand why I do what I do and it helps me put it into words. I found this book extremely helpful and I plan to always keep it by my side while in the planning phase of projects. If only I picked it up sooner. I plan to see what other books this author has. Thank you!

A beautiful book
This is a beautiful book, reminds one of a coffee table book. Lots of information regarding design layout. Almost too much. Not necessarily a book for beginner designers but I’ll muddle my way through.

A great step-by-step breakdown of grids
This book gets into the logic, methodologies for developing a grid for a project (especially books), and has lots and lots of well illustrated examples. I thought I knew grids, but this book opened a new dimension for me.

Bellissimo e validissimo. Un libro bello da consultare, ma anche da studiare; ricchissimo di esempi e di loro variazioni, di nozioni e logiche alla base della creazione di griglie, dalle più semplici alle più originali.
