Cheap but functional
This is not the compass you'll want to take for a month of backpacking in Alaska, but it works fine for showing the kids how they work. Functional, easy to rotate and read the numbers, etc, and lanyard is handy.

Good for the price
Better by far than the cheapo versions at Big box stores. Gets the job done at a fair price. I bought a bunch of these for students to use at my hunter safety courses, and they have worked excellent.

There are Better Compasses for the Money
This is a cheap compass which I bought, along with a few others, for learning purposes. (I am a Scoutmaster and own a number compasses which I use both for navigation/adventuring and for teaching). It has been adequate for classroom work, but does not work well for actual navigation applications, such as the orienteering courses that the scouts do when learning. It does not reliably point to magnetic north with any great accuracy, and tends to give erroneous readings up to 10-15 degrees off. I have now owned it for nearly 5 years, and an air bubble has formed within the liquid filled housing. My small kids now use it as a toy when we are out hiking.I understand that this is advertised as a basic compass, and should not be expected to perform as well as more expensive ones. There are, however, much better compasses out there for a similar price, that are more reliable and less frustrating for young learners (such as Coghlans Map Compass , which I purchased at the same time).
