Atari Official 2600+ Console & Joystick - HDMI Output - Includes 10 Games

What the Atari company did here was genius and could inspire others to breath life into game libraries a lot of people already have but can not play due to hardware limitations after 40+ years. I was disappointed initially, the original ship date was November 16th but it got delayed a week which stinks because my birthday is the 17th and I was ready to play this all night before a day off work to celebrate. Oh well - it arrived today a week later. I am not disappointed at all, the packaging was great and the system was presented when opening the box in a way that showcases its early video game technology beauty - the simplicity of the Atari 2600 design is one of the things that makes it so iconic, there's a reason they have one of the originals like the one I have sitting next to my new Atari 2600+ in the Smithsonian. There was no USB brick plug included - no issue - this is a modern system to play 40+ year old games - I plugged the USB into my HD TV and the HDMI in and away I went. This console brings life to an aged game collection. As many people buying this may know - the console does not actually play the game off the cartridge - it reads it for what title it is and emulates it and works for the majority of Atari titles. This is fantastic because while most of my carts still worked ok the coloring and lighting in some titles was often flawed which is to be expected from games that are pushing 5 decades old. That all changes with the Atari 2600+ - the carts go in without any effort the game loads up from onboard emulation machine within seconds and all I can say is WOW! The colors, the sounds, the textures within the games, they all look incredible in full HD. Some people are purists, and I will never stop using my original hardware - but to see this done by Atari to a truly landmark system brings a tear to my eyes. I wish more companies would give their old games this treatment - because the reality is the console isn't the focal point here - it's making a massive library of games playable again with modern hardware. I can not recommend this product enough to anyone that likes Atari games, and hats off to the new owners of the Atari brand name for putting something like this on the market, a bold choice I would love to see more players in the video game market follow in this direction. Old games are abundant and cheap and the hardware options out there are not getting younger - I can only hope we see this trend take off.

I ultimately decided to get a 2600+ mainly because of its HDMI connectivity, and to be sure 2600/7800 games have never looked better on a modern TV. The aesthetics of the console are also quite nice - it looks like a classic woodgrain 2600 in about 3/4 scale and the various switches have the same feel as a classic 2600. That said, there are a few disclaimers for prospective buyers. 1. If you have any homebrew titles, you effectively have to get the beta firmware upgrade from the AtariAge website (at least as of March 2024). The 2600+ is effectively a Stella emulator, and when you use a cartridge, the emulator looks for the corresponding ROM. Version 1.0 of the firmware simply couldn't play homebrews. Updating the firmware is not hard, but it takes some effort. 2. Additionally, the 1.0 firmware had its share of bugs, with some games not playing correctly, some difficulty switch settings were backwards, etc. 3. The console is a little too faithful to the original design - in particular, the controller jacks are on the back of the unit just like on the original 2600, but it would be more practical to have the jacks on the front. 4. The cord on the included joystick is quite short, much like the cords on original 2600 controllers. However, in the year 2024, you probably don't want to sit 3 feet from your 60 inch TV the way you did your 19" CRT back in the 80s. 5. There's no USB power brick in the box. Sure, everyone has one, but come on. Additionally, to do firmware updates, you need a USB-C cord which supports data transfer - a micro SD card slot would have been much appreciated. All in all, it's a fun system, and if you have a 2600/7800 library it's worth a purchase.

Yeah, it's an emulation box - but one of the better (best?) ones out there. Think if Nintendo allowed cartridges on the NES or SNES minis (and made the console a little larger) and that is kind of what you have here with Atari's offering. Controllers and games (including the 10-in-1 and new ones being produced) work in the old Atari's as well as vice versa (that includes your original controllers too). There are a small amount of games that don't work and a lot of homebrew doesn't (to be expected on emulation machines), however (as seen in the picture) I was able to boot up a rather obscure PAL multicart from Australia and it worked (though Ice Hockey was played on a black screen instead of white). Like another reviewer stated, maintaining old Atari units are getting cumbersome and are more and more for the hardcore hobbyists and tinkerers. Those who just want to play their old games and maintain a collection of Atari carts they can easily play will love this little unit. That goes for me who dug up my old carts a few months ago but haven't been able to test my original 2600 to see if it even works (let alone try to figure out the cable math to hook it up to a modern TV). This thing is just easy and fun. It doesn't come with a power plug but the USB will plug into any TV with a USB port and will power the console that way (so you don't need an extra wall adapter if you don't want to use one). Everything else looks and feels like the original 2600, which is kinda wild. I'd probably give it a 4.5 in a vacuum, but will give Atari the benefit of the doubt as far as furthering game compatibilities with updates as well as supporting future original 2600/7800 game releases. This has the potential to breathe a lot of life into retro gaming as whole and I'm all for it.

Honestly an amazing console! I'm 23 and wanted to get into retro gaming and didn't want to just get any emulator system I love owning physical copies of my games and I love the fact that this is an official Atari console and this console has been perfect. I was able to find some of my dad's old games and it's very easy to find them online too and it's been really fun. I picked up another joystick and it's been fun playing 2 player games with friends. I've owned this console a few months now and there has been no issues at all. The update process is very easy to do on a PC with the update tool and it seems like there's a lot of support from Atari for this console and I even see on their website that they are making brand new game cartridges for this system! The graphics quality is great and very clear and I love the design of this console, it feels and seems to be very well built. It's been definitely worth the purchase for hours of gameplay it's been awesome!

This was such a thrill to activate this unit. Many of us 20th century gamers grew up with the 6507-equipped CX-2600 with its 160x192 pixels in 128 colors with 128 bytes of RAM in a RIOT chip. We still have the dozens, even hundreds of cartridges and controllers, but our ability to maintain our heavy-sixers and light-fours is steadily waning away. We can rebuild our boards with capacitor and resistor kits, but the CPU chip is impossible to find. Also, the video played on a modern video panel jitters and flickers. All of these problems are now gone. This new unit plugs right in and goes to work without a hiccup. The old controllers plug right in and work. Games do the same. The unit is of quality construction on the outside though the switches are very clunky. Image reproduction is excellent with 4:3 and 16:9 ratios available. The slow downs: 1. finding a wall nub with a USB-C connector to plug into this unit is necessary; just as in the 1970s, everything here is strung together by short wires which means gamers have to sit up close to their huge video panels to play games; the unit is in a reduced size similar to the Atari flashback series of consoles; the included cartridge has dip switches which all original games did not have; it's a shame this unit does not play the 5600 series games. I highly recommend this unit. Giving up on updating and maintaining our forty five year old consoles is now possible. The buyer will not regret this purchase and play Atari for another forty years.

Full disclosure: I have yet to set up and use my new 2600+, so keep that in mind while reading this review. Also, keep in mind that's the point of my review. I can't set it up because I can't turn it on. It doesn't come with any kind of power-generation unit. Yeah, it's got a nice helpful USB-C cable which is supposed to do that, but there's nothing to plug it into. While I knew it didn't come with one, what I didn't know, and find inexcusable, is that there is absolutely zero information about what kind of power unit is required for it. As someone who works in IT, I'm well aware that devices like this have power needs ... which are articulated exactly nowhere. The only information provided is on the "Quick Guide" card which pictures the aforementioned USB-C cable being connected to some kind of plug that then goes into a wall outlet (I've attached photo to my review). Sadly, the picture doesn't disclose anything of consequence about whatever it is I need to plug this thing into. I get it. A charger is needed. But which kind? I can't even begin to tell you. Nor, for that matter, can Atari ... because they don't even bother to try. They just show you a picture of something and hope you make more sense of it than they thought to provide.

I was excited to get this game system and play old Atari games that I enjoyed during my youth. I found several used Atari games for sale online for reasonable prices (around $10 each). It's fun to play these games mostly for nostalgia reasons. However, a few of the old games still hold up as fun/challenging games despite their old technology and poor graphics by today's gaming standards (e.g., Donkey Kong, Pac Man, Frogger, Defender II, etc.). The only downsides I noticed is that this Atari 2600+ game system only comes with 1 joystick controller... so you must buy another joystick controller if you want to play 2 player games. Also, the controller you get is a bit difficult to use (you have to move the joystick just right to get the game to move in that direction... this can be very frustrating when playing games like Pac Man and you move the joystick up, but the game doesn't recognize it). The other disappointment that I found is that that 2600+ system is not 100% compatible with all of the old Atari game cartridges. I bought 10 old games (all of which were tested by the seller/vendor before purchase) and 3 of them didn't load/work on my machine. I bought another back of 7 and 2 or 3 didn't work either. I'm told this is a common issue with the 2600+ and not that I have a defective unit. Overall, it's fun. But I don't think I'll play it often.

For once, one of these 'retro console remakes' put out on the market for old Atari games doesn't disappoint. Why? Because it's not just a selection of pre-installed games. You're picking the games by playing your own cartridges. GOOD - Will play virtually every cartridge for the Atari 2600 and 7800, with some exceptions. Those exceptions are usually rare titles. There's a compatibility list on Atari's website. - Compatible with all 1st and 3rd party controllers made for the original 2600 and 7800 consoles. - Atari did make new cartridges (and re-release a few old ones) for this console and its 7800+ counterpart. - Makes it so much easier to play these old games on modern TV sets. Modifying the original hardware or finding adapters can get difficult and/or expensive. BAD - The firmware will need to be updated on occasion. The process is a bit convoluted, but not impossible for a layman to discern. - The included replica of the original CX-40 joystick has the same problem that the original had for me: It was NOT made with left-handed players in mind. Good thing I have plenty of other controllers that are, including WICO joysticks and the CX-78 gamepads that Atari made for their Atari+ platform. OVERALL The only difference that players will notice between the 2600+ and the 7800+ is the case design and buttons/switches on them. I did read in an Atari Age forum thread that the 7800+ chipset was supposed to be slightly more efficient, but even that thread pointed out that this meant nothing to end users. So, which one you pick will depend on your own preferences. I bought this one first and got the 7800+ later because it was on sale. The 7800+ stays attached to the main TV in my game room. The 2600+ is going on a retro-gaming TV cart, along with a few other classic consoles. Should be great for parties...

Com a última atualização: 2.0.1.6 o meu Atari 2600+ está rodando todos os jogos perfeitamente, além da qualidade e nitidez excelentes das imagens dos jogos na TV moderna, que na minha opinião é bem superior a qualquer outro emulador que testei. Tamanho compacto muito prático para uso recorrente e acondicionamento. No geral, gostei muito dessa nova versão do Atari, não me arrependi de ter adquirido. Um ponto negativo que observei foi o fato de não rodar cartucho everdrive, o que pode ser resolvido por cartuchos multijogos chaveados com combinações para cada jogo, tenho um de 512 jogos. Outro ponto negativo é não possuir uma fonte de alimentação, porém é possível usar carregador de celular USB-c, lembrando que o indicado é usar carregador de 5V com 1A. Por último, em relação ao envio, o produto foi enviado em uma caixa bem maior e sem áproteção interna, causando movimentação excessiva do produto e devido a isso alguns pequenos danos na caixa original dele.

Aside from being a little bit smaller, the 2600+ gaming console, and the joystick controller that comes with it, pretty much looks and feels like the original Atari 2600 gaming console. It's easy to connect to a modern-day TV or monitor via HDMI connection and the picture and colors of the games is crisp and clear. The 2600+ can play most original Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges (see compatibility list on Atari's site). It also comes with a 10-in-1 games cartridge with a nice selection of games to help get started with (my fav of the games on the 10-in-1 cartridge being Missile Command). Notes: To power the 2600+ you'll need to use your own USB power-adapter, such as what one might use for a phone-charger, or could also plug-into a USB port that most modern-day TVs have. As the 2600+ only comes with one game-controller (the classic looking Atari 2600 joystick), you may want to consider getting another game-controller (and as some games are for 2 Players). The old original Atari 2600 joysticks and paddles are compatible to use. Or I could also recommend getting a Hyperkin Ranger gamepad, which the thumbstick and pad feels great playing with (and less strain on the hands compared to using the classic-styled 2600 Joystick), and it also has a paddle built-in for paddle games (though I find the paddle on the Ranger a bit stiff, so I'll be getting the new Atari Paddle Pack). Playing the old classic Atari games is a big hit of nostalgia for me. I've been wanting to more get into retro-gaming, and the Atari 2600+ console being a physical console which plays the original 2600 and 7800 game cartridges, for me it gives me the feeling of an authentic retro-gaming experience and overall I'm loving the Atari 2600+ gaming console.

When I first saw that the Atari 2600 was being resurrected I went to the Atari website to check it out. Impressed with what I saw I knew I would be buying one. It said they would be sold in Canada through Amazon. I kept checking back. In the US these things are priced at $129 so I was expecting to pay more than $149 for it. When I ordered the 2600 at first it said delivery would be December 1st, then November 25th and then it arrived today. I am giving this 5 stars because of its early arrival, the quality of the product and the memories it brought back. I bought my first Atari 2600 back in 1980 or so with money saved up from my paper route. The original cost me a small fortune back then but it included two joysticks, two paddles and a couple of games. Comparatively speaking this thing is dirt cheap. I ordered up a second joystick to go a long with it and finding a usb compatible plug floating around the house was enough. Set up was a breeze of course. The plus looks very similar to the original, just smaller. The joysticks have the same tight feel of the ones from my youth. The games look great on modern screens, and the game play is still captivating. My 20 year old son saw me hooking it up and it didn't take him long to join me in a game of combat and one of missile command. He commented on the difference between these games compared to the ones he buys with their 3-D graphics and immersive story telling. I have already been on ebay to order up a couple more games and expect to buy the paddle bundle in a week or two. 5/5 stars.
