Pocket Oxford Classical Greek Dictionary [Morwood, James, Taylor, John] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Pocket Oxford Classical Greek Dictionary Review: just what i needed - The price was right and it turned out to be the perfect addition to my study of Greek with Athenaze. Review: good, portable dictionary - This is a replacement copy for me -- my earlier one was lost during a move, and I didn't want to do without it. I also have the biggest and smallest Liddell and Scott ancient Greek lexica and wouldn't dream of giving them up, but even the smallest one can be heavy for day-to-day portability. This paperback dictionary is useful for looking up the basic meaning of words on the go, has more legible type, and, unlike Liddell and Scott, contains an English-to-Greek section.

Good value for new students and those who will subject their dictionaries to significant abuse.
Good reference, especially for the new student or one who is reviewing. This is a "pocket" dictionary, and so, it does not offer much in the way of examples from literature or alternate definitions. It does have a good number of entries for alternate forms of words with direction to the more regular forms of those Greek words. Note that this is NOT a volume designe to last for many years. It is printed on the same sort of paper as you would find in a mass-distribution paper-back edition for a popular novel. At the same time, however, it's target audience is likely going to be throwing this volume in a book bag or a knapsack, carrying it around campus, and subjecting it to all the abuse that our elementary school teachers told us NOT to do with our books. It is also very reasonably priced, so that when, after a few years, you have moved on to a more specialized, comprehensive dictionary (if you stick with the subject), you will have gotten good value from the investment. If the student is looking for more in-depth definitions, etymologies and examples of usage, they should find a specialist dictionary. That, however, would represent a very significant investment.

good easy to use dictionary
this is probably the only good new ancient greek dictionary that you can buy. its easy to read and use. irregular verb have their principal parts given, unless theyre in the 100 most common list which is in the back. theres also a english to greek section for the truly awesome among us.

Really good abbreviated Classic Greek dictionary
I was thrown off by the word "pocket dictionary," but it is paper back sized and has most of the words I look for. A larger dictionary for Classical Greek would be unwieldy and harder to use quickly. A more complete Classic Greek dictionary would be very expensive and this "pocket" dictionary was cheap!

Handy, useful, incomplete
The book is small, so I easily hold it in one hand while writing with the other. It contains nearly all the words I try to look up. However, I am trying to read the Septuagint, and a few words I need are not in this little Morwood and Taylor. Perhaps I am being unfair: these words seem also not to be in the Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon of Liddell and Scott.

Ancient Greek - NOT modern Greek
I purchased this secondhand because I am studying Philosophy and want to look up some of the words I encounter in works about and by the Ancient Greek Philosophers (Socrates, Plato, etc). However, my secondhand book had someone list of phrases tucked inside, asking for coffee and things like that, so obviously someone had purchased it looking for a modern Greek dictionary - don't think the ancient Greeks had coffee! - so don't make the same mistake!! The book centers on Attic Greek (the Greek of Plato and Socrates and the Golden Age of Athens in the 5th century BC), however the book states it should also be helpful when trying to read Homeric Greek and the Greek New Testament. It's perfectly good for what I needed, although I'm not sure it contains some of the technical philosophical words I was looking for, but I am learning a little Ancient Greek along with my philosophy, so it is very useful. The biggest section is words in the greek alphabet translated into English, a smaller section is in English translating to the Greek. However, what I think it is missing is a section of phonetic greek (i.e. in the latin alphabet) translated into Greek and English (or at least the latin alphabet translation next to the Greek) for example the common word Logos, appears in the Greek alphabet and separately as Word and Reason in the English to Greek section, but nowhere is it written as Logos, so if you come across this and wanted to look up, either it's original Greek spelling or it's meaning in English, this dictionary is not going to help. Having said that you can easily do an Internet search for 'Logos definition', the problem is you cannot easily do an internet search for the word in it's Greek spelling - hence the need for a dictionary! Lastly, if you are looking for pronunciation hints, rather than just written language, this is not the dictionary for you.

Far better than the Langenscheidt
Finally we have a classical Ellenic dictionary that has an English to Greek section and a complete section on numerals. Exactly why every text on the classical Greek language seems to shy away from the simple matter of counting from one to ten has always been a mystery to me, but now the point is moot. I got this book in the mail a week ago and can now toss my Langenscheidt in the trash.

安くて便利、しかも英希つき、基本動詞の活用表が便利。①古典ギリシャ語辞典は、大学書林は語数が少なすぎる。②CambridgeもBrillも高すぎる。③Liddell&Scott(Intermediate, Abridged)は基礎学力がないと”ひけない”。④裏技だが、田中・松平:ギリシア語入門、岩波書店の巻末語彙集・希和p264-198・和希p299‐309をコピーして簡易辞書として使う手もある。 →以上からお薦めできるのは、OxfordとLangenscheitそれにRoutledge:Woodhouse.ではないかと思う。迷ったときに、英・希は存外に便利だ。お薦め。

A very useful dictionary. I thoroughly recommend it.

It is like they used recycled paper from newspaper. Content is ok but it is a reference book and I expected a better paper quality for a dictionary which I planned using for years.
