can I charge/discharge from either connector?

No. The female connector is for charging only; the male connector supplies power from the battery. I definitely wouldn't try switching them since it's a lithium ion battery - it could seriously overheat and cause a fire.

Will this battery fit any battery holder available elsewhere? Can I possibly buy a battery holder that will fit this? Thanks!

not sure I drilled a hole in an old plastic file card holder and secure all wiring inside and feed the solar panel there also

Hello, The female DC5521 plug is for charging only. The bare wires includes positive pole and negtive pole to provide electricity to device. If you cut the female plug and you need to charge the battery in 12V supply.
