it will come with an unregistered simcard which you can topup and use, or you can use anysimcard you want. you dont need a subscription, a pay as you go simcard will do

sim: From the description, I'd understood the system does not incur phone charges as it hangs up straight away - if correct, why is any top up needed?

a) the networks will shutdown simcards with no chargeable calls so the unit will send a text message out every 6 weeks to keep simcard active, also if you are using caller ID the unit will reply every time you store a phone number to it
