The definitive, fully-illustrated guide to the trees of Britain and non-Mediterranean Europe. This brand-new field guide to the trees of northern Europe contains some of the finest original tree illustrations ever produced. The introduction contains illustrations of the main leaves, buds, and firs you are likely to find, and these provide the starting point for identification by leading you to a 'key' species. Within each tree family there is a list of key species and a guide to the most important features to look for when identifying a particular tree from that family. Then individual species are clearly described and a detailed illustration is given on the same page. Covering all the tree species found outside the major arboretums, from the olive tree to the eucalyptus, this is one of the most important tree guides to have appeared in the last 20 years. The illustrations are annotated with essential identification features, and the text highlights the most important things to look for to aid fast and accurate identification. There is also coverage of all the species native to Southern Europe.

Collins Tree Guide .
This book is the most comprehensive text I have come across , both from the number of species discussed and the wonderful illustrations . The Author is quite definitive in his treatise on each tree and as covered a wide range of variants .I find it useful for my work as an Engineer , where I have possible issues with trees near buildings . This book will allow me to determine fairly accurately which tree I may be dealing with .Otherwise the book is highly interesting reading .It is indeed encyclopaedic in content and is a worthy companion of anybodies bookshelf .

Very comprehensive.
An excellent field guide to British and European trees. A bit big and heavy to be called a pocket guide but very comprehensive and well illustrated.

clear and informative
I have not used this book yet but having chosen it in order to have a guide with illustrations rather than photos it seems to be a good choice. Its clearly laid out with plenty of information and very good illustrations of trees, leaves, fruits etc. a bit bulky if you want a book to to walking but otherwise excellent.

Very comprehensive
This is an extensive compilation of trees that can be found in the UK. The information contained is most informative. It is a book for the more keen naturalist I feel as the variety of trees in any given category could overwhelm the casual observer. For my purposes, however, it is a very good and useful guide.

Love it
The detail, the illustrations, fab. Favourite purchase of the year (I know it's only January! I can't wait to whip out my tree knowledge.

Beautifully illustrated
My mum loved this book. chose this one as it is meant to have all of the trees in the UK, not just the most common which is what I found some of the other books covered. The beginning of the book is great where it helps you to identify branch and leaf type.

something of great beauty and can live a thousand years
Trees... something of great beauty and can live a thousand years. Just look around you, how many can you name? I was shocked at my ignorance. We use them for houses, furniture, heating and visual stunning backdrops. A world without trees would not exist. They extract one of the worlds most dangerous greenhouse gases and convert it into oxygen. This book is filled with great information on these amazing living organisms. The drawings are in some ways better than photo's when identifying different types... and they have families and cousins just like us and have preferences, where they like to grow. My only (minor) thing would be that it covers Europe as well as the UK and thus includes a lot of variations of trees that may not be found in the UK. But that said.... if you want to uncover the beauty of one the greatest natural friends we have, this book did it for me.
