From the legendary Studio Ghibli and based on the beloved novel by acclaimed writer Astrid Lindgren (Pippy Longstocking), comes the epic 26-part story of a ten-year-old girl born on a stormy night in a mountain fort, surrounded by her parents and a loving band of robbers. Ronja grows to be a strong and active girl, and discovers that the forest is both a beautiful and frightening place inhabited by strange creatures. She befriends the son of her father's rival and so begins the drama of her friendship and family loyalties. We watch as she explores and understands these key factors in her life, and discovers that seemingly irresolvable choices can finally be made with the help of love and understanding. Review: Big fan of studio ghibli - My friend was really happy with the present that I bought for her as she is a very big fan of studio ghibli Review: Beautifully illustrated series in which children come first. - This is bright and positive. Central in the series is the world as seen through the eyes of children, which is so refreshing. The world of adults plays a secondary role to the deep friendship between two children that develops. Although they are a girl (Ronja) and boy (Birk) their relationship is not sexualised and they are not their to represent their respective genders. They are themselves, enjoying being alive and equally capable. The tempoy is perfect too. About being dubbed: I see this as a plus. It means young children, who can't read, cant watch this.

Anime set of tales of Ronja, the daughter of a robber
This DVD gives you a set of animated episodes of a young child growing up in a wild forest area - each short story comes separately titled, which soon gets a little tedious if watching in one go, but the simple stories may well hold the attention for a youngster... sadly not the case in our household.

Why no Japanese Version w/ English Subtitles?
OK, this is really for kids, but even so, reading subtitles is surely better for them than just spacing out on what is quite a simple story. Even for the smaller kids, subtitles are good training. I am not buying into this, and the English version was rubbish. The voices are weak. I want to hear this in Japanese. Lame Ghibli, really lame. WHY NO JAPANESE VERSION WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES?

didn't worked
The dvd didn't worked on a europe dvd player. Plus it is just swedish language with english subtitles, but no english voice record as I thought it would be. But there was no information on the amazon side about it. Totally fail and a waste of money

Da da da HEY HEY!
One of the best movies ever made! It's based on a story from Astrid Lindgren about a girl who is raised within a band of robbers, and her adventures in the nearby forest. It is also a coming of age tale, in which she befriends Birk, a child in a rival band of robbers. The movie is actually very insightful in it's discussion of the different notions of family and the complexities of interpersonal relationships. Also, there are some nicely done and kind of eerie practical effects in this movie- many of which show the magical creatures in the woods. An excellent family movie, but really for anyone.

Love it
So, I'm an idiot and didn't read the description that says it's region locked, but luckily I have a DVD that can do all regions. I LOVE this and my daughter and I have been watching it together. It's such a great show!

Great movie, reminded me of my childhood
Great movie, reminded me of my childhood. Be aware it is a censored version; skinny dipping scene & winter bathing scene are removed.
