Buttery smooth writing with a premium, durable, and simplistic build for under $20. STATIONERY USED: Maruman Mnemosyne N174 (B5 8mm Ruled Notebook). NIB/WRITING PERFORMANCE: The nib provides a smooth writing experience that doesn’t feel toothy or provide feedback. I personally went with the “Medium Point” BUILD & DESIGN: The build of the fountain pen is entirely aluminum (metal), providing a premium, substantial feel compared to plastic builds. It has an overall very durable build and finish that can sustain abuse. The nib is also durable. The overall design is very simplistic, consisting of black all-around (depending on which color you choose) with a scale-like pattern. FILLING SYSTEM: The pen holds ink via the included standard 3.5mm bore converter. This allows someone to fill it up with ink easily, which means it’s beginner friendly. Keep in mind, like any other fountain pen, there is no ink included. OVERALL: The Asvin Hongdian 1861 Black Forest is a simplistic, durable and premium fountain pen that provides great unmatched value for the price.

I've been using this for work and it's been doing great! Writes well and I love the feel and the weight to it. I've been wanting to move towards a pen that I can refill as I'm tired of having to buy new pens when they run out. This was a perfect solution. It's beautiful and comes for a reasonable price. I'll have to see how it holds up in the coming months but I feel confidant in its durability. There is some smearing from time to time but that could be the type of ink I'm using. I'm new to fountain pens so that I don't know how to gage. Nonetheless I'd say it's a great starter pen. Super easy to fill and use!

I wish I was able to write this mildly-unhinged Amazon Review with this pen. I initially ordered this for my Father In Law - He's a very good man. He liked it so much, and I liked it so much I got one for me. This is a pen I use every day, and following my father's tradition of using subversive colors of ink (his was green), mine is purple. No, I don't sign the check run in purple, I have a separate, wider-nib fountain pen specifically for writing appreciation notes to employees and for signing the check run. I also enjoy the feature of being able to fill my pen using an ink bottle with the reservoir that comes with the pen. Absolute genius -- FORGET CARTRIDGES-- Just transition over to inkbottles already you cowards. Twist down the top of the reservoir, then slowly twist it the other way to draw up the ink. Everything holds well, no leaks, no mess, no issues. I've carry this time-bomb of an ink explosion with me everywhere in my bag for a few months now and the pen closes solidly without a problem. My beloved Tarot Deck, my 100 Tampons pencil bag(Sally Ride, may she rest in peace and inspiration), my delightful green tote bag, all remain unsoiled from the purple ink contained within this solidly built, amazing value for the price, fountain pen. I love writing with this pen, it is my favorite pen. There is a great weight to it, it feels great in your hand, it has a nice solid feel while you're writing, and you just want to write some more. When its inevitable loss does come, I will ugly cry. I will sit in gratitude for the thoughts and feelings I was able to express with this pen.

I quite like this pen. I got it in a medium nib and it writes w a fair amount of ink on the page so I wouldn’t recommend this for lefty’s or writers w an ink that doesn’t dry quickly. It writes very smoothly though it does occasionally skip, but that could also be user error on my part. The converter was really easy to fill and felt very standard. No issues w leakage so far. The pen came in the case as promised. The cap snaps on and pulls off, doesn’t screw. When you close it, it makes a definitive noise so you know it’s properly sealed. I ordered the pen in the mustard yellow color and it is just gorgeous! It looks exactly how it did in the photos, which is great for me but might not be what ppl are looking for. My favorite color is chartreuse so I was really hoping the pictures weren’t just poorly lit and that it would actually look like that, and it did! But if you are expecting a nice mustard yellow color, I’d suggest going w one of the other yellow options. Do flush the nib and feed w water before putting your ink of choice in, as they do dip test every pen w a red/ burgundy ink to check its quality. Don’t be alarmed that the pen is ‘dirty’ it’s just leftover ink in the feed and has no bearing on if this is a good pen or not. I quite like the weight of this pen. I was worried that since I was buying a color and not a metal finish, that it would be made of plastic. It’s not! It’s a metal pen through and through! And, worry not, it doesn’t leave a coin smell on your hands after use. I’d say this is a very beginner friendly pen that will last you well into your fountain pen journey! As far as nib size goes, I ordered a medium, but if you are used to ballpoints I’d suggest a fine. Maybe not an extra fine as sometimes those require a little fine tuning, but fine is probably a more standard. The medium puts a line down that is about a 0.9/0.7mm size, so slightly bold. The nib itself is gorgeous! The two tones play w each other very nicely! Honestly, if you are looking for an affordable way to get into fountain pens, I’d say this is a great start, especially considering they sell a nib replacement set/kit w multiple nib sizes and some specialty ones as well. If you are already in the pen world and just want a cheaper but sturdy and reliable pen, go for this guy!

Very fine pens for a small amount of money. Original order was for a Medium Nib but in use found it a little too bold. for my script. Luckily they also sell a set of 3 other nib sizes and Fine was easy to install as I thought Extra Fine would be too scratchy. The Fine Nib is a very smooth and unscratchy writer and extremely satisfied. A very fine instrument indeed! Recommend Highly!

I have a few of these in different colors and absolutely LOVE them! They are easy to fill and write beautifully!

I bought this pen in October of 2024 and now that I've had a good amount of time to settle with it, I'm writing a review. By all means, I don't think this is a bad pen. It's a good starter pen but I have a few problems with it, such is the 3 star review. I got this pen with a medium nib. First, I've had some issues with skipping and false starts. I also cap my pen when it's not in use so I know it isn't drying out. This isn't a huge deal but sometimes it can get annoying when I need to go over my writing again because of the skipping, leaving my writing messy and chunky. The pen feels durable and heavy but the pen has been getting some scuff marks over time (see attached pictures). The clip on the cap is also a little too stiff and leaves marks on whatever its clipped onto. The weight of the pen is fine when not posted but when posted it's a little too heavy for me. That leads into the size of the grip, which I feel is too narrow and makes my hand cramp if writing for long periods of time. I think it's a fine starter pen for someone just getting into the hobby or someone who is just a casual enjoyer, but I'm going to be looking towards other brands for the future. I was originally going to rate it four stars considering the problems aren't that bad, but there's so many that I had to rate three stars instead.

It's a sturdy, smooth fountain pen with a good weight. I love the soft, organic, matte look of the "ice flower" finish in particular. The pen looks and feels nice but isn't so expensive that you get super precious about it and hesitate to even use it. I love my kakunos but they're a bit chunky and I think I'll be traveling with these instead.

There's a lot to like about the pen. I got the black version and it has a nice feel in the hand when writing. It's not a light pen so somewhat hefty compared to my other ones which I really appreciate. The all-black body and nib looks very cool too. Filled it with my workhorse Parker royal blue ink and started writing and it is smooth but only after the initial stroke. So you don't get ink flowing through immediately and quite a number of sentences have to be re-written. And obviously once you start trying to sign your name, that's where it all falls apart. So when you do things slow and steady, the pen performs - but when you start going a bit faster, the ink does not flow as one would expect.
