Epson Expression Home XP-235 All-in-One Inkjet Printer

I bought this to go in my student room, and it works perfectly - it prints clear high quality pages and is effortless to use. Setting up the WiFi using WPS was a bit of a pain, probably because I rushed it, but eventually all was connected and the connection has remained solid throughout a couple of weeks of use. The quality of the prints seems just as good as those from the more premium printer (also Epson) at my parent's house, and as good as the prints from my university's very large expensive office printers, so for under £40 it is truly a bargain. For the price the printer is fantastic, and the offer that gives 25% off Epson ink makes for a great saving - always make sure to buy official inks and not the cheap knock-offs, as there's no guarantee that they're compatible or of good quality.

I bought this as a replacement for my trusty older SX235W that served me well until it needed an ink pad replacing after 4 years. The cartridges were cheap as it accepted compatibles and the scanner was great. I assumed that the upgraded version would be pretty much the same but I was wrong. The first one that arrived run out of ink after printing a few photos. I spend £36 replacing the colours with genuine Espson cartridges as all the ones I had for my other one no longer fitted. When I tried to replace magenta though the cradle stuck and I couldn't do anything. - It went back. The repacement came. We struggle to get any WiFi and it kept dropping out. Assuming it was faulty we sent it back, again. The second replacement came #3. After a week of following instructions, watching videos and seeking advice we even considered hiring an IT pro to install it for us.. We came here to look for advice and found that we were not alone. Also it only takes expsensive Epson cartridges. Basically a replacement of all 4 costs more than the printer and they don't last very long. After a lot of shouting and the printer almost taking flying lessons through the nearest window, valuing our sanity an to avoid stress this one is now going back too! I now have no useable printer. I am trying to find the one I had originally but it has been discontinued. Maybe Epson werent' happy that you could get compatible cartridges for about £2 each instead of 12 so have made it obsolete!

I like this printer a lot. It's very neat, especially compared to my previous Epson printer. The on-screen messages are good and comprehensive. It's fast, especially on 'greyscale' setting for text only prints, and the print clarity is very good. Reviewers say it's flimsy and yes, some of the plastic pull-out parts are thin and lightweight, but if you handle a printer like you ought to, it's fine. I also find that the colours that it produces are more true to the original screen document. My old Epson used to print everything much darker than it should. So much so I had to 'lighten' screen pics to improve the print. Not so with the XP-235. The colours that come out of the printer are closer to what the screen shows. I bought Epson replacement ink cartridges after reading the scare stories about 'equivalent' inks clogging up the nozzles. I did use some non-Epson cartridges on my old printer and the nozzles clogged. OK the ink prices are more than the printer, but the printer price is so good, you'd have to go a long time before the overall running cost would become high. What else? well it's a photocopier - great, and a scanner.

Part of Epson's Small-In-One range, the Expression XP-235 is a basic yet capable wireless home printer ideal for quick print jobs and the odd heavier duty print task when called upon. Unboxing and plugging in is a quick process, although installation of drivers and Epson's printer management software is, as is customary for this sort of thing, pretty agonising. But it's worth doing for the utilities you get, and in order to set up the excellent Epson Connect feature. More on that later. Printing is speedy and accurate, if relatively noisy. Personally speaking that's not an issue, although I appreciate some people prefer quieter models. Print quality is average to good, with sharp results and adequate colour richness if using the native ink cartridges. On that subject, having separate CMYK cartridges is helpful such that only depleted ones need to be replaced but, as is almost universally the case, it can be a struggle to find reasonably priced replacements. I don't know if I'd go in for it if photo printing is your intention. The body of the printer feels a bit flimsy and in/out feed trays wobble alarmingly although again, this doesn't greatly detract from the experience of using it under normal conditions. It has a compact, no-frills chassis and fits snugly under the desk in my office. A special mention must go to the brilliant Epson Connect facility, which enables owners to wirelessly print documents without the need for a home server (although this is optionally available too). Standard filetypes such as MS Office documents, JPG, PDF, BMP, GIF and PNG can be printed with ease, even when sent as email attachments. I love this feature and have already made extensive use of it by forwarding documents to the device remotely, picking them straight up off the printer when I get home. The process also works in reverse: being capable of scanning a source image and uploading it straight away to your preferred cloud file storage service, something which can be set up on the Epson Connect website and changed at any time. Your Epson account can automatically generate response emails to ping back the status of the print or scan job, and while it's not an instantaneous round-trip from digital to hard copy to confirmation, it's normally just a few minutes before a standard document is ready for collection. Setting this service up can be a tiny bit fiddly - at least if you want to secure your printer and lock it to a handful of white-listed input email addresses - without being too intimidating. Following up the base software installation with Epson Connect setup is definitely the way to go, then it's all ready to use from then on. Even in 2016 one can seldom overestimate the importance of being able to produce hard copies of documents, vouchers, receipts and so on. For a quick and easy print solution which gives you good results without breaking the bank (depending on your choice when it comes to replenishing ink), the Expression XP-235 represents cracking value in a saturated market.

Let's be honest, a printer that does everything this does and wifi included, would've cost a fortune a few years back. Even though it feels a little flimsy, the parts you have to move from time to time are well designed and move freely, so as long as you're not trying to operate it after a bottle of wine, it will be fine. Great Auto Scans Good copys Seperate colour cartridges, with independent Black obviously. Lovely and quiet, quality prints, and around £30 quid, what more could we want. I know I'm happy :-) P.S. Many of you will need a usb lead for first connecting to your wifi, communication lead not supplied, I was lucky because I collect leads and had one handy, best you think about this when buying one, as it could've been for me a little disheartening knowing I couldn't set it up when it arrived because I never had a lead, I don't have wifi, so needed one as well, basically you need one. Haven't used it heavily yet, but so far: Pros: - Prints well, good colour, decent print quality - Powers up fairly quickly compared to other printers I've used - Single inks - you can replace just the ink colour that is out - Photocopying is quick and easy Cons: - Scans less crisp than I expected, still reasonable quality - Wi-fi constantly drops, sometimes in the middle of a job - Doesn't come with a USB cable, so no way of connecting when the wi-fi decides not to work - If it runs out of paper or ink in the middle of a job, it doesn't seem to be able to resume the job after re-filling. You have to start the job all over again

Excellent. Arrived very promptly and very well packaged. Works so well. It's just what I needed to be able to print everything and anything with good colour and definition. The inks themselves can be expensive if you don't shop around but the printer is really easy to use and to set up. I use mine with the Wi-Fi connection which means I have a choice where to locate the printer. Wi-Fi connection was so easy, it practically did itself and I find it very easy to remove and replace ink cartridges. Excellent value for money.

I'm very dissatisfied with this printer and with the help available (not) from Epson. Installation was easy. The problem was that, wirelessly, it would only print from Word. All other printing had to be done with a cable connection. Epson were no help at all. Now, I have a new BT Home Hub and I can't find out how to tell the printer to connect to the new network. I Googled this problem and found many other people with the same issue and no answer. I have easily connected my laptop, iPad and Amazon Fire Stick. It's an OK printer but for me ATM, not a wireless one. Edited February 2017. This is the worst printer I've ever had. Changing the cartridges is very difficult. It doesn''t recognise a genuine Epson cartridge and the warning light flashes continuously. Then, when you try to reinstall, the cartridges will not move into the correct position. I've Googled this problem and find that it's a common complaint (often from IT people). I'd advise anyone *not* to buy this printer. Wireless doesn't work and changing a cartridge can take an hour.
