This is the perfect budget 85mm portrait lens for sony E-Mount, both for APS-C & Full Frame. There are some quirks, but this has great character. Positives: Weight: Very Light & compact Clarity: Clean image, even on higher resolution sensors Noise: There is only the slightest autofocus noise Focus: Although this is using an older motor design, for most photos - this meets my needs. Things to keep in mind: There aren't really any negatives at this price point. As this lens is also regularly on offer, you can't really go wrong. With that said, it's the perfect portrait carry for lovers of this focal length. The image is clear and the background separation is brilliant, you likely won't be using it for sport content and to be honest, I haven't even attempted it for this use. For 95% of people, this is the perfect starter portrait lens - I would even say, unless you specifically need the top tier, most wedding photographers would be more than happy use this in a professional context. This is a full frame lens, so for those using this on the APS-C cameras, you're getting closer to the 127mm F2.8 look. If you need something actually close to this focal range, you will want to pickup either the Sigma 56mm F1.4 or the Sony Zeiss 55mm F1.8. Its compact nature means it's always at least a second lens on my carry.

An excellent lens, for me, as an amateur, it’s just a gift! Optically sharp, very light glass, I liked the strict design, excellent autofocus, good bokeh in portraits, light weight and of course - cheap price! The case is assembled perfectly, nothing hangs or creaks. For my Sony A7M2 camera this is what I need! I had my eye on it for a long time, but the budget was limited. I was very happy to buy it in January 2024 at an excellent Black Friday price of £379. By the way, if anyone needs a 50mm lens for full format, now there is a new Meike FE AF 50mm f/1.8, it is also on AMAZON, I just bought it too and am very pleased with it. And what’s interesting is that it costs 2 times less than this one. I repeat once again, I’m not a professional, so I don’t look for expensive super bright lenses at crazy prices, photographing based on the principle: it’s not the equipment that shoots, but the photographer!

Sharp lens, fast auto focus, not GM but very, very good lens.

This lens is an excellent performer and represents a good compromise compared to the premium f1.4 GM lens and third party alternatives. The key strengths of this lens for me are - the autofocus is quick and accurate, meeting my needs for portraits - both human and feline. - it features a customisable button and autofocus switch on the lens for convenient control/usability. - build quality is very good - it feels good in the hand without being heavy. - the image quality is excellent and sharp. The aperture of f1.8 is more than usable as I frequently stop the lens down to ensure both eyes and the face is in focus and I like to include some of the background for context. On an A7iii the lowlight performance means that f1.8 is usable in lowlight situations and experience has backed it up. On a higher resolution body such as the A7RIII or A7RIV, noise may be an issue but that is subjective. I came to this after using my venerable Canon EF85mm f1.8 via an MC-11 adapter by Sigma. The Sony 85mm f1.8 is a definite upgrade in every way from build quality to image quality. It’s moderate size and weight means it is always in my camera bag and I have used it in street, landscape, casual and portrait settings without issue. There are cheaper options available but you compromise on build quality and features (control switches and custom button) and there are premium alternatives which offer potentially higher performance. The 85mm f1.8 represents a balanced alternative, priced very competitively with strong performance.

Da grande amante degli obiettivi tele, utilizzo il Sony 85mm f/1.8 da quasi due anni sulla mia Sony A7S III, abbinato al 35mm f/1.8 sempre di Sony. Questa lente da 85mm è incredibilmente versatile per le riprese video: con l'apertura f/1.8, offre un bokeh morbido e naturale che permette al soggetto di staccarsi perfettamente dallo sfondo, creando una sensazione di profondità che fa davvero la differenza, specialmente in ambienti di ripresa professionali. È ideale quando documento eventi in cui mantenere la giusta distanza è cruciale per catturare reazioni emotive spontanee e naturali. Per le riprese video, è la mia lente preferita quando realizzo interviste, spot e documentari di matrimonio (sì, mi piace chiamarli così per differenziarli dai video posati e innaturali). La velocità di messa a fuoco è impeccabile, sia per movimenti rapidi che per riprese più tranquille: non solo è silenziosa, ma anche estremamente precisa. Questo mi consente di ottenere filmati fluidi e privi di distrazioni, una caratteristica fondamentale quando si lavora con video in 4K, come quelli girati con la mia A7S III. Inoltre, la qualità costruttiva di questo obiettivo è eccellente, pur mantenendo un peso e dimensioni contenuti. Può sembrare un dettaglio, ma quando si trascorrono ore sul set o in giro per eventi, è un aspetto che non va sottovalutato (lo dico con cognizione di causa, dopo aver trascorso 48 ore filate a documentare la Processione dei Misteri di Trapani). È un obiettivo che ho imparato a conoscere e apprezzare profondamente: ogni volta che lo uso, sono sempre più convinto che sia una delle migliori scelte in questa fascia di prezzo per chi lavora da solo e desidera ottenere una resa eccezionale senza dover vendere un rene.

Je l'ai acheté 500€ dans la promotion de Printemps et il est monté ici sur un Sony A7c. Malgré la taille des lentilles, l'objectif reste léger (371g). Vous noterez sa composition comprends un verre ED qui est là pour réduire les aberrations chromatiques. Si les aberrations chromatiques latérales sont bien corrigées, les aberrations chromatiques longitudinales sont seulement réduites (elles sont bien mieux réduites que la version Nikkor AF-S 85mm/1.8 qui n'utilise pas de verre ED). J'ai volontairement grossi (à 200%) le défaut montrant une page d'un livre photographié de biais à f/1.8. Le texte avant la zone nette est coloré en bleu, celui après la zone nette est un peu entouré de rose. Mais, dans la vie réelle, sauf si vous faites le portrait d'une personne dont le vêtement est écrit comme une page de texte, vous pourrez utiliser la pleine ouverture. Sinon, ce défaut disparaîtra à partir de f/4. J'ai repris les test MTF du principal loueur américain "LensRentals" qui publie les mesures de netteté à pleine ouverture de 10 objectifs. Ces mesures vont plus loin que celle des Sony qui se limite à 30 paires de lignes par mm et sera applicable aux boîtiers de 50Mpixels. La netteté est excellente pour un objectifs de 500€. Elle descends doucement du centre vers les bords. Le vignettage est important comme toujours pour les objectifs à grande ouverture et il sera corrigé par l'application Sony Imaging Edge ou par le boîtier si vous vous contentez des JPEG. Le "Flare" (reflets dans l'objectif) est extrêmement bien traité avec une qualité du traitement anti-reflets excellente. Vous pourrez faire des portraits en contre-jour sans soucis. Le Sony A7c que j'utilise n'a que 24Mpixels mais il m'a permis de voir le rendu des couleurs sur ces fleurs de printemps. La prise en main est excellente. L'autofocus peut être rapide ou assez lent selon que le boîtier reconnaît la personne ou l'objet à photographier. Si vous prenez une série d'images d'une personne, ce sera très rapide parce que le boîtier reconnaît son sujet. Si vous partez d'une image complètement floue, ce sera plus long... Donc, essayez de partir sur une mise au point approximative avant de mitrailler.

Ich habe es jetzt etwa eine Woche im Einsatz und bin einfach nur begeistert. Im direkten Vergleich zum 28–70mm Kit-Objektiv ist der Unterschied gewaltig: mehr Schärfe, bessere Freistellung, Verarbeitung und insgesamt professionellere Ergebnisse.
