Brilliant...you DON'T need to give your credit card details to setup!
Should have bought one of these years ago. Works perfectly, great interface, very fast and easy to set up. I understand the comments around having to declare a credit card for payments but actually you don't need to do this. if you use the Roku.com sign up webpage instead you can then link your Ipad, phone, laptop etc to the device once its installed and enter the setup code. Its really straight forward. I have a 2005 Philips LCD TV which I love. Has great sound and picture quality and links up to my old SONY surround sound system. Didn't want to change it for a SMART TV so bought this. Now watching YouTube and Netflix which was the main reason for buying it, but there's so much other stuff to watch as well. Highly recommend it even if you have a SMART TV as there's loads of things you can find which arent on TV platforms such as Samsung Hub

If you don't have a smart tv, get this!
This was bought as a gift for my ageing mother-in-law. I set it up for her on one of my TVs and then my wife installed it on her tv - she only needed to reselect the wireless network and it was all systems go. So, if you don't have / want a smart tv, this stick effectively turns any tv with an hdmi connector into a smart tv. No point repeating the blurb in the Amazon listing but I do have a smart tv and it's really pretty similar. There are a few options like the Roku but I chose the Roku because it is platform agnostic (sorry Amazon [Fire] and Sky [NowTV stick]) and it is still a very affordable price. The Roku has Netflix, Amazon, BBC iPlayer etc., which I believe is currently also true of the Amazon and Sky sticks. My thinking was that Roku would be less likely to remove any of these for competitive reasons. The stick was easy to set up, though you need to sign up to many of the services via a web browser. Once you're signed up and signed in the Roku remembers your details - it's a once only pain. The remote control is very clear and quite simple. I found the navigation speed through the interface was as speedy as my fairly recent LG smart tv and stuff started playing as quickly. So, what's not to like? It's significantly increased the range of tv on offer for a very, very modest investment. One more benefit for the mother in law - her TV is HD but the freeview tuner in it is SD only. With BBC iPlayer she can watch in HD.

Very good and cheep way to standardise all your TVs, better than sky
We all ready have a few Roku Devices, and they are good at what they do. The search all compatable streaming services feature is great as you can find a film or series across prime and Disney plus as well as now TV I think Netflix as well but been a while details on there website of compatable services. Roku are a cheep way to standardise all the different brand TVs in your home or business so you have one clean simple user interface for all your users. They give sky a run for their money on an all in one user interface and you can add voice recognition on some models. You can also link to Alexa and Google home. Compatable Miracast and apple project to the device from supported Apple and Android devices. As far as I can find they support nearly every streaming services you can think of all the big main ones are there. The units are tiny and come with double sided tape to place on the bottom or top, side of your TV Only complaint if your TV dose not have usb ports you will need to source a USB power supply, they do come with the correct lead but it's only long enough to find a usb port on the TV or very close by. Most TVs I have plugged the unit in and it's been fine on the built in usb port. Devices are 2.4ghz WiFi only would have loved an ethernet port.

Ticks all the essential boxes, but one or two warning notes
I bought the Roku as a replacement for a failed 30 month old Amazon Fire box, though I also use the Fire sticks in other places, so that's my primary standard of comparison. The good thing about the Roku over the Fire is the extra range of services you can access out of the box without having to try to break the OS - things like NowTV are available and Google Video works fine but so still does Amazon's Prime Video and video quality is comparable with no obvious problems. Set against that are a variety of minor niggles, not enough for me to reject it but sufficient to take the extra star off the rating. In use, it feels slightly more sluggish to respond than the Amazon sticks even though it's a newer design, though actual playback seems fine. The remote control is an infra-red unit unlike the Fire's controller, so if you prefer to use the dedicated handset to the mobile app, you have to physically stick the Roku unit somewhere with line of sight, typically on the TV frame. Additionally, the remote's layout, although broadly similar isn't quite as well thought out as the Fire's, something which arguably is also true of the on-screen menus, though they are generally clean and uncluttered. I was also surprised (and slightly uncomfortable) to find that Roku require you to provide a credit card or PayPal account as part of your registration even if you only wanted to use free streaming services, or ones which you register and pay for separately. In summary, it's simple to set up, works and supports a wider range of services, but it's not as polished as the Amazon product and does require you to create a Roku account for payment authorisation whether you need that service or not.

The best cheap 1080p streaming box for someone who wants choice!
Great product! I had a NowTv box before this, but that's a very limited offering compared to Roku as NowTv box doesn't have netflix, amazon, google play or tv player. Roku make NowTv's boxes for them, so the operating system is near enough exactly the same and this box also has the NowTV app, so this was a very easy upgrade! I wish I'd dug deeper and found this before we wasted £15 on NowTv tbh! There's loads of features I like about it, the mobile app is brilliant, it turns your phone into a remote that controls the Roku and makes typing in a doddle (it can be tiresome to slowly type in long program names letter by letter with the provided tv remote). I like having the Netflix shortcut key on the remote too, I just wish the other buttons were more useful for people in the UK - Prime, iPlayer, Google Play - perhaps? The box is really discreet, it has a double-sided adhesive tape so you can pin it down so it doesn't slip or move, making using the infrared remote easier. The box also runs from usb for power, so you can plug it in to your tv (if it has usb ports) and the Roku will fire up and shut down when you turn your tv on or off. The box only runs up to 1080p, so you won't be able to stream 4k with it, but that's not a problem for me as this is just a cheap stepping stone until I invest in a new 4K telly. I really can't find any niggles with it, especially for the price. Let's hope it keeps on running smoothly!

Absolutely brilliant for anyone of any age
Absolutely love this, im a bit of a gadget geek and have to say Roku left me fat from dissapointed . I have had lots of different freeview set top boxes and sticks. I've always sworn by Amazon firestick until now. There's so much more available with the Roku express. It's easy to use and straight forward installation has got me hooked. The remote has a Netflix button which takes you directly to Netflix. Many more free apps with extra channels and it's clearly catagorised which apps have additional charges and which apps don't. Also very good for children which is great as I have 3 small children . Now tv is available for extra charge. I have opted for sky movies, entertainment and children's package which is 18 pounds a month , a small fee in comparison with the £75 a month I was originally paying sky . Also I still have the same access to Amazon prime as I did on the firestick . There are so so many options available and the Roku has made it easy not to look back . Awesome bit of kit.

2 Year Update: Increased to 5 stars
2 Year update: Still going strong and I have not had a single problem with this. A huge investment of around £25 has saved me approx £2400 on Sky fees alone over 2 years. Previous Update: I initially put this as 2 star as it forces the input of payment info to use it (read below - I wasn't happy at all!). However, it is simply fantastic. Fast and easy to use. It has contributed partly to my decision to cancel Sky which I did today. I can get Sky store and Nowtv on Roku. So probably worth the issue with payment info. Another great feature is the pairing ability in order to cast from a mobile device. I can pair my phone with the Roku and then cast whatever I have on my phone. So I can watch a movie on my phone and cast it to the roku/tv. Great for those without the latest smart TVs. Original review: Avery mixed review here. The installation was simple and fast. It works and the picture quality is good. However. During installation you have to go onto a web browser to set up an account and input a code from the installation to link it. It take you to a payment page and forces you to input payment card info or paypal before you can continue. I bought this item to attach to an older flatscreen TV that has no wifi capability just so Netflix and Youtube can be used. I have no intention of purchasing movies from other apps and in fact I don't want anyone (my kids) to have the ability. Yet I was forced to do this in order to continue. I don't like this practice from manufacturers. If I change my mind later about buying things then I would prefer to input my payment details at that point. Now there is another company out there holding my paypal info. I would definitely not recommend this to anyone for this one reason. I would not have bought the product had I know ahead of time.

Super quick, and great value!
Nice product, handy remote control with an instant Netflix button which is handy. It is very small and easy to stick to the side of the TV. After 2 years the roku still works great. I will say that if you have bad internet it can disconnect a bit and has to be reconnected. It is easy to do this, but takes about 30 seconds. As my TV is on a movable arm and installed on a boat where I pull it in and out regularly, the movement has not upset the stickiness of the roku on the side of the TV. For the price, it is a great product and supports a lot of apps.
